Overall Satisfaction with Linode
VPS servers currently host legacy systems for email and hosting other legacy apps that have been deprecated/abandoned. Our live/main email server is hosted here and we have several clients that host their apps on their own accounts that we service/support. Linode fulfills the role of quick server deployment as well which plays a role in our disaster recovery plan.
- Quick server deployment.
- Affordable cost.
- Good assortment of free products such as Longview and DNS hosting.
- Good assortment of products for sale (VPS ranges, storage blocks, etc).
- Significant downtime issues.
- CPU theft is common.
- Auto-deploy scripts are behind competitors offerings (example = other competitors will deploy a cPanel server with license included fully ready to go).
- Competitive pricing was good for small to medium server needs (beyond the 32GB servers it becomes much more affordable to get dedicated servers elsewhere).
- Network speeds gave good benefit to hosting speeds for TTFB which was a good selling point for some of our services.
- Downtime caused much concern from clients/customers, degraded our reputation.
We used many other cloud providers such as Vultr and AWS. Ultimately chose Linode due to ease of use (the old simple control panel), fair pricing, selection of services and good price/performance value aspect.
The speedy servers allowed for us to sell higher quality hosting services to our clients than our competitors could afford, this initially gave us an edge in our general market/niche. Having tools like Longview available helped debug/troubleshoot and monitor issues which could have cost a lot of $ if not for Linode having those tools freely available.
In polls for our clients uptime ranked #1 in their wants/needs, #2 came in as speed and #3 was cost... This put us in a particularly bad position since Linode server uptime had been getting worse and worse in the years leading up to our exit from Linode.
