Overall Satisfaction with Linode

Linode is our outsource provider of choice for cloud processing. They provide all of the server resources we use in-house or use as platforms for SaaS offerings, apart from laptops and a very niche service provision, they are our IT hardware provider.
  • Configurable product offering--we can rightsize VM provisioned machines
  • Very competitive pricing
  • Responsive support team
  • Lots of useful guide documents available
  • A huge range of supported platforms
  • VM management interface is often changed and often not for the better
  • No cross-site migration capability
  • Limited EU data centers
  • Resize of a VM may be easy but requires outage
Linode support generally resolves the issues or provides information on how to resolve them if the issue is in-server. There have been occasions where their response could have been a little faster.
We don't own a single server or any data center capability, which has reduced data center provisioning capital costs to zero and ongoing costs to a predictable and reasonable value. Expansion (or reduction) of provisioned servers has no capital costs or commitments either, and semi-dynamic rightsizing of servers (we can migrate up or down the offered performance tiers at will) allows us to run with the optimum size and cost of servers.
We have experienced very few unexpected server outages and planned server work is announced in time to allow us to choose migrations to different hardware at times to minimize the business impact.
Very suited to our market, providing definite sized reliable platforms for running industry-standard application services on a Linux platform. We configure the servers to use Linode's offering of the latest kernel, which removed a maintenance task and ensures we have the latest kernel at boot time.

Linode is not really suitable for non-Linux offerings--you can run a Windows VM but it's all down to the user. As the name implies, Linode are very Linux centric.
