Pros

  • Great BI solution that is low cost.
  • Integrates very well with other Microsoft Office tools such as Excel so end users do not need extensive training on a new reporting tool.

Cons

  • No end user controlled reporting. An analyst with SQL coding knowledge needs to program each report.
  • Ability to maintain and develop dashboards with KPI's for fast delivery to decision makers across the organization.
  • Insight into overall departmental performance. Allowance for departments to set their own metrics for success.
  • Data insights for marketing and sales campaigns allow decision makers to fine tune future campaigns.
Microsoft BI is a great tool but may require additional, expensive staff to maintain the software and keep it running on a day to day basis from an operational perspective. Other BI products are making the jump to "Self Service" Business Intelligence, empowering the end user to create and modify their data needs. However, if a company resides on a MS SQL server structure, Microsoft's BI tool is easy to integrate and can deploy an enterprise BI solution in a relative short time. Considering the initial software costs, you get a lot for your money.
