Overall Satisfaction with Planview Portfolios

We use Planview Portfolios for managing all Capital and most Expense Projects including annual planning, ongoing execution, resource management, and financial data forecasting and actuals tracking.

Pros

  • Track financial actuals and forecasts.
  • Present projects in user definable portfolios based on user selected criteria.
  • It provides visibility of resource assignments and utilization through any number of organizational and other attribute filters.

Cons

  • Some users feel the UI could be more intuitive. Although once learned, users are ok with it; new users are sometimes reluctant.
  • Better history tracking for financials and schedule changes would improve our ability to address user concerns with unexpected changes to data.
  • Giving Users the ability to go back to a previous life cycle step.
  • Undo button for changes to project schedules and financials.
  • Provides business with the ability to identify and focus on strategic projects and align them with objectives.
  • Gives business visibility of resource utilization so staffing needs can be anticipated and addressed.
  • Provides business with clear visibility of cost forecasts and performance vs budget.

Would you buy Planview Portfolios again?

Yes

Planview Portfolios is a strong application for Enterprise-Level project/resource data input and tracking. Configuration is relatively easy to learn compared to other tools; however, it does take some time investment. It is not a good fit for users looking for something with Excel-like flexibility and is not particularly suited to robust document management.

Scalability was important since we are a large multi-division corporation.
I wasn't here for the original selection. So, it is not possible to answer.

Planview Portfolios Implementation

Implementation teams have been good!
Yes - Demand Management, followed by Resource Management, is used for specific processes. We are continuing to add new businesses.
Change management was a small part of the implementation and was well-handled
  • Mostly getting users to keep data current.

Planview Portfolios Training

Generally good. Sometimes, users are a bit overwhelmed, and it takes multiple sessions for them to get the hang of it.

Configuring Planview Portfolios

Usually able to configure what users require.
Keep Lifecycles simple. Conditional branching can make following lifecycle config difficult and testing of changes becomes too complicated because of all the combinations requiring specific testing.

Planview Portfolios Reliability

We are constantly growing and expanding. It is challenging to accommodate different user needs, but the system does provide means of doing that as we desire.
There are occasions when the system is a bit sluggish. However, it may not always be on the Planview side. We are investing in better tools to monitor our network performance, which will help us diagnose issues more effectively in the future.

Integrating Planview Portfolios

Does require Planview engagement. However, the Dev Team has historically been outstanding.
