Overall Satisfaction with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL)

We use RHEL for our server infrastructure as an alternative to windows. Often RHEL offers increased performance as well as runs without GUI. Several teams prefer the platform over windows alternatives. We also use RHEL satellite for our patching compliance and Ansible automation to support our infrastructure. We have about 400 servers running RHEL

Pros

  • Maximized performance while being GUIless.
  • Opensource patching compliance
  • Scalability

Cons

  • I don't really have detailed examples of where RHEL falls short over windows besides peoples knowledge of the application
  • Our RHEL environment continues to grow. Multiple windows based applications have moved to RHEL and the trend continues.
Once you have a general understanding of navigating RHEL systems, I think it is easy to understand, but getting there is the problem. The industry is lacking on knowledge of using Linux operating systems.
We are in our infancy of exploring Ubuntu as an option. Red Hat is more robust but Ubuntu may offer cost savings,

Do you think Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL)'s feature set?

Yes

Did Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) live up to sales and marketing promises?

I wasn't involved with the selection/purchase process

Did implementation of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) again?

Yes

Maybe SQL? I am not an application developer who ultimately decides what OS to use. I think performance is clearly better than Windows when running a minimal install. Also containers are a no brainier on RHEL. I think the GUI experience of Windows is more streamlined than RHEL however
