Overall Satisfaction with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL)

I administrate a segregated network of around 300 Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) systems for software development. This includes servers and workstations. Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) provides a professionally supported operating system with the software tools needed for our software development.

Pros

  • Software installation using package management
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) online support documentation
  • Pre-configuring a new installation for DISA STIG compliance

Cons

  • Full featured desktop icon support in GNOME is a little broken
  • DNF / RPM package dependency error messages, and how to resolve them
  • Improvements in how to configure what is and isn't collected by the auditing daemon
  • Positive: Ease of renewing subscriptions, and the low cost of subscriptions
  • Positive: Providing a standard development environment for developers
  • Positive: Providing a standard environment even between major versions
GNOME Shell is a major shift in user interface and has required some re-training for our users. The GNOME Classic interface is appreciated but not full featured.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) is less optimal in situations where an upgrade is needed (for example from Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 8 to Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 9) without doing a full disk wipe.
