Overall Satisfaction with Red Hat JBoss Enterprise Application Platform

We use it to host our web application for production and all of our testing environments, down to developer-integrated testing. It allows us to scale and manage configurations and provide security from web server to application server to utility server. We moved from IBM Websphere and Red Hat JBoss Enterprise Application Platform, while still a bit of a bear to install and upgrade, it is easier to manage and delegate responsibilities.

Pros

  • Application scaling
  • Configuration management
  • Detailed configuration abilities

Cons

  • Difficult to replicate configuration outside of a container environment
  • Still requires quite a bit of knowledge of the CLI
  • Integration with deployment tools requires CLI knowledge
  • Scaling quicker
  • Spinning up environments in less time
  • Configuration management ease
Once you understand the nuances of the CLI it becomes a usable product combined with the GUI. The GUI is good for quick oversight and visibility into the applications, but the configuration management can be a bit clunky, especially around Java options and the like. Logging is fairly thorough as well and is key to figuring out operational issues.
Red Hat JBoss Enterprise Application Platform is lighterweight, easier to manage, and easier to configure than others.

Yes

Would you buy Red Hat JBoss Enterprise Application Platform again?

Yes

It's well-suited for being less bulky and is more manageable than other IBM products for Java applications. It's more scalable and provides broader features than others, and is able to load balance with better visibility. The "containers" within are lighter weight and thus don't consume as many resources as Websphere did.
