Overall Satisfaction with SQL Sentry Performance Advisor

We use SQL Sentry to monitor about 20 servers. We also use event chaining to control a complicated process that runs every night to prepare our sales people. Sometimes it crashes and we have to restart the service, but that's manageable. It helps junior people troubleshoot SQL performance issues.

  • When users complain of performance issues you can drill down to see what was running at the time.
  • You can go to the "All Computers" and watch for issues before it becomes a problem.
  • Event chaining can be one consolidated place to orchestrate tasks. It's a little kludgy but it usually works.

  • Load faster!
  • Forward and backward version support. We have a lot of people using SQL Sentry, and I don't like that we all have to upgrade at the same time.
  • The default on the dashboard should be history mode, not sample mode. It would be nice if you could save that.
We have Solar Winds for monitoring the enterprise. SS does things SW doesn't. Having we don't really need any other tools besides SS.
If you have a lot of servers and a few people SS can get very expensive. A native MS solution would make more sense. If you have a small number of servers and a lot of junior people, it makes more sense.

Hello, First I would like to thank you for taking the time to rate us, and providing some great information on both how SQL Sentry works well for you, and how we can improve it. I want to provide some information based on the cons you listed. In the SQL Sentry client, if you go to Tools > User Preferences > Performance Advisor, you can set the “Default Dashboard Mode” to History. Here, you can also expand the default time span shown in History mode. As for slow loading speeds, make sure you are doing regular maintenance on the SQL Sentry database. As the client is simply querying the SQL Sentry database for most of the data, index fragmentation and poor statistics can result in slow load times. Also, if you are monitoring 5 servers, you qualify for a “free” Performance Advisor and Fragmentation Manager license for the server hosting the SQL Sentry database. I would recommend watching this server with Performance Advisor and enabling Fragmentation Manager. Doing this would allow us to analyze the SQL Sentry database performance, keep up to date index fragmentation levels, and see if there is any resource contention if the SQL Sentry database is not on a dedicated host. Our Development team has been tirelessly working away at adding additional features and capabilities to our products. This massive amount of development leads to many ongoing schema and architectural changes at the core of the product. Given this degree of change, we require all SQL Sentry components be on the same version for compatibility. We sympathize with this and understand the inconvenience it can have. But know that this is because we are relentlessly working to provide the best product out there. If you are having any issues, or have any questions about the information I have provided, please feel free to contact our Support team at support@sqlsentry.com. Again, thank you for your input and for trusting SQL Sentry to help monitor your environment.
