Overall Satisfaction with SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS)

We're using SQL Server Management Studio for database administration and development.

Pros

  • Database queries
  • Database management
  • Table design

Cons

  • The table relation and index dialogs should allow resizing
  • The autocomplete for queries could be better
  • Allow for tabs or query history/saving state
  • Should have more data export options (Excel, json, etc), like SQL Data Studio
  • The database diagram functionality feels dated and clunky
  • Positive: Has allowed quick access to our databases both for our development and production environments, on local environments or Azure.
  • It's fast, not sluggish
  • The newest version (22.1) has many improvements which has allowed us to be more productive, starting with the server connection dialog.
It's very easy to use, it's quick, and the newest version has theme support and a good dark theme, even Github Copilot integration. It feels very modern, not as dated as it did before.
It still lacks some features that make DataGrip great for developers like tab history, persists the last session, detailed customization for query formatting, more data export options and the table edit dialog is more comfortable to use since it can be resized.

Do you think SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS)'s feature set?

Yes

Did SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) again?

Yes

It's well suited for database management, backups, data import/export. It's not as strong for handling multiple queries at the same time, as a developer, we sometimes have multiple queries opened on the development database. In SSMS if you close the software, you'll lose the opened tabs and history.
