Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use Teradata Vantage to analyse parcel event data, plus finance, customer reviews, transport movements and profitability. Our data is loaded every 5 minutes to the database. It is used to produce operational reports and alerts intraday, plus previous day's performance, and monitoring longer term performance trends. We also produce reports for our clients to inform them of their deliveries performance. The finance department use data to report on their data, and profitability data is used by account managers. The Teradata Vantage database performs well for us, and the cloud instance we use works without much intervention.

Pros and Cons

Performance is good
Cloud instance doesn't need much management
Integrates well with our tools

Managed backups could be better. Triggered scheduling, and being able to back up different areas of data at different times would be great.
The clearscape interface should be provided as an option in the cloud on an application node in the same instance as the database
Add better ability to use timestamps - functions to add dates and times to get a timestamp, convert timestamp(6) to timestamp(0) easily, etc.

Return on Investment

Delivery performance is measured and used extensively to monitor operations and improve operational performance
Client reporting from Teradata Vantage frees up operational systems that used to run these reports
Adhoc analytic queries looking for issues when there are business challenges are easy to write, perform well, and provide answers that were not possible before we used Teradata Vantage data.

It works will with large amounts of structured data. The physical table design needs to be done correctly to get good performance, but when that is done creating performant queries is simple.
It works less well with unstructured data. It is best to split this out into more structured tables where possible.
