Overall Satisfaction with Spotfire

Organization usage: focused in development and operations departments.

Business Problems:
  • Visualization of operations metrics such as production tracking.
  • Data QC.
  • Prototype advanced analytical approaches.

Pros

  • Interactive visualizations ("Brush UI").
  • Data wrangling interface.
  • Search function for Spotfire features.

Cons

  • Steep learning curve.
  • Self help options confusing - online help is convoluted; inline help is mediocre.
  • Trellis by a hierarchy or custom grouping of categories.
  • Facilitates more complex but timely operational decisions with revenue impacts in the order of $100K-plus such as oil blending optimization or well workover prioritization.
  • Replacing some of our very expensive niche software applications with internally developed dashboards that we can much more easily customize as we wish.
  • Much greater awareness of the state of our data and helping to promote a more data-driven work culture.
Found Spotfire more customizable though not as pretty as Tableau when we evaluated in 2016.
Well Suited:
  • Data exploration including with the recommendation engine - these are useful reminders of perhaps hidden configurations of the base plots.
  • Distributing custom code via data functions.
  • Builds very nicely off a standard data platform such as TDV.
Poorly suited:
  • Not fully multi-user: risks in active collaboration on a Spotfire project and potential saving over each other's work.
  • Standalone not a strong data analytics tool - we've had to customize/augment with custom code or statistica.

Spotfire Training

  • in-person training
Impact was limited and really only provided awareness. Training was more useful to power users who were able to pickup a few additional tips or workflows. Our current training is more one on one now with new users having a chance to try it out first. We have access to online training but usage has been little.
