Overall Satisfaction with Unique Learning System

I use the Unique Learning System in my self-contained Special Education class. I love how it can be our entire curriculum, including reading, math, science, and social studies. The repetition is great with our students and they know what to expect, it is an important part of our routine and ensures I am able to cover all expected skills as it is aligned to our Extended Content Standards.

Pros

  • Pictures represent diversity.
  • N2Y stories and breaking news incorporate relevant global ideas.
  • Benchmarks and checkmarks help provide solid data and help to build IEPs.

Cons

  • Math is seriously lacking. It provides insufficient variety and is not engaging for students.
  • Breaking news has undergone a change and it is not as beneficial for our students.
  • This has helped with keeping track of IEP goal progress.
  • It helps build appropriate IEP goals based on data from benchmarks and checkpoints.
  • It has shown student progress in the units, as we typically see growth from pre-assessment to post-assessment each month!
It has made lesson planning much easier. I simply write out which skill I'll be working on each day using the pacing guide, and beyond that, I can plan small-group work. My lesson planning is almost done! It makes differentiating lessons much easier and ensures that I am teaching each skill my students need; it's already planned out for me.
I feel that it has helped me to provide more rigorous instruction. In years past, I've taught the most basic skills, but this year I've jumped into the curriculum, teaching things I felt would be too difficult for my students, and they have learned and made amazing growth. Some students are getting just exposure, but that is so important. I am excited that I have been able to provide my students with greater learning opportunities and that they have been successful with this curriculum.
Many days, the website lags or doesn't work at all. Many days, the screens are too small for students to see or make choices. Otherwise, we are printing and preparing MANY MANY materials, and our school limits how much we can print. It typically will not work on our iPads, so usability has been very difficult.
Our school district provided ULS, so nothing to compare.

I wasn't involved with the selection/purchase process

No

Would you buy Unique Learning System again?

Yes

I love that it covers all the skills students need and is aligned with our standards. It really helps students with reading comprehension, although I do not feel it is as strong in actually teaching reading. Math is lacking, and I tend to have to supplement with other materials and curricula.
