Overall Satisfaction with Unique Learning System
Unique Learning System has been helpful for my Transition (18-22 years) classroom. We regularly use the Unit Lessons to guide our practice of self-advocacy, math, budgeting, and other life skills. I love how the units focus on 1 topic but provide activities across different domains which allows for generalization. We occasionally use the Transition Passport as well for students working on individual goals like washing dishes, laundry etc. The task analysis breaks up the task into simple steps and the visuals are beneficial for most of our learners! We also use N2Y to stay updated on current events. I'd love for the N2Y articles to have a variety of articles based on the age group of students.
Pros
- Using visuals across learning materials
- Having differentiated versions of N2Y articles
- Ability to present it in the front of the classroom so that students can engage with materials on the smart board
- Speaker button for non-readers to take turns reading
Cons
- Different news articles for older students (more age-appropriate)
- Lessons for life skills like doing the laundry and dishes, to go with the task analyses
- More videos embedded within materials
- Less time to plan and create materials
- Some materials can be used to teach IEP goals
- Increasing student engagement during lessons
Unique Learning System has saved me a lot of time that I would otherwise spend lesson planning. The assessments at the end of each lesson allow me to assess students comprehension and accuracy. The unit lessons provide me reading that students can do during down time. The differentiated materials increase student engagement during lessons.
I recently started doing an Independent Living skills lesson for my Transition students weekly. I have a variety of students in my classroom and I utilized the simplified and symbolized version of the text. For students who are non-verbal, I provided the lesson-specific communication board so that they were able to respond to questions and engage during the reading. Students were able to answer the assessment questions with increased accuracy and they benefitted from the structure of the lesson. The joke was also a nice touch!
