Overall Satisfaction with Unique Learning System

I use Unique Learning System to meet some of the educational needs of my students who are medically fragile.

Pros

  • create leveled books which address essential elements standards
  • provide a library of books via n2y library to provide supplemental literacy opportunities
  • provide courses such as colors, sizes, and shapes to help support student's IEP goals related to color, size, and shape.

Cons

  • expanding n2y library by for example creating sets of books such as creating a n2y book "Colors of Winter", "Fall", and "Summer" to go along with the "Colors of Spring" book.
  • providing an alternative version to the leveled books to include a version which lends itself to low vision learners, for example just one symbol per page/illustration or with less busy backgrounds in the illustration
  • make a version of each benchmark which is more student friendly for students who use eye gaze as primary form of communication
  • Multiple hours a week saved on lesson planning
  • Able to meet/address state standards while addressing IEP goals
  • Supporting present levels using benchmark data
The all in one system has allowed me to be more consistent in my ability to design instruction and in my initial years of teaching provided me a framework which helped to clearly see all of the essential components to teaching students who are medically fragile with multiple disabilies from a academic/pre academic standpoint.
I have combined using Unique Learning System for instruction and Symbolstix to help create visual support for within lessons and across the day. I find using Symbolstix for one of my students with behavior challenges is helpful in reducing their behaviors which carries over into reduced challenging behavior when providing instruction with the Leveled books and Easy Read books.
Usability is generally good when you are willing to take the time to do the professional development offered. When i need help I can use the chat button and the representatives I chat with are always very helpful and have helped me learned as I go when I have trouble navigating any features.

When combined with real objects to go along with the stories and pre- programmed vocabulary pages for each student via their current communication mode, Unique Learning System's Leveled and Easy Read books provide teachers with students who have multiple disabilities a way to introduce and expose students to social studies and science based concepts in a meaningful way which allows for students to have opportunities to be active participants throughout the lesson.
