Overall Satisfaction with Unique Learning System

I use Unique Learning System for support in English and Math. The students read one of the issues for the week as a class, then break off into small groups with differentiated groups with teachers support to complete some of the activities. I also use the readings for some of the holidays as well as Joey's Locker when we need a quick activity.

Pros

  • Differentiates
  • Visual support
  • Scaffolding
  • Resources on a variety of topics

Cons

  • being able to quickly locate certain topics
  • being able to archive issues in News2You
  • more comprehension questions in science/social studies
  • time saved on planning is huge
  • differentiation of instruction
  • symbol support for non-readers in other activities from symbolstix
This is certainly something that I am interested in, but my district has not provided training in this. Several of the teachers have asked for training over the years, but the district has not provided anything for us. I have tried to independently learn this, but it is a much more time-consuming task than I am able to allow given my other responsibilities.
Unique Learning System has a significant and prevalent impact on my classroom. All of my AAC students have SymbolStix as their communication iconography, so the consistent use of those visuals has been tremendous. Any content that I create is supported through SymbolStix as well. This has allowed my students to make significant progress; just last week, some of my students were able to read aloud for the first time all year. The importance of this cannot be understated and serves as testimony to the effectiveness of your program.
There is a lot of content in Unique Learning System. It can sometimes be time consuming to navigate through everything. I appreciate the depth and breadth of the resources, but it can also be tough to use when I need a worksheet or packet for my students. The use of Unique Learning System on the computer is great, but my students seem to learn best when they have a pen and paper in front of them.
Unique Learning System is far superior to Newsela. The symbol support alone makes Unique Learning System much more appropriate for my students. One thing that I like about Newsela is the integrated comprehension questions within the reading. The students cannot advance until they get the questions correct, and I think that is a valuable way to reinforce their reading attentiveness.

Yes

Did Unique Learning System live up to sales and marketing promises?

I wasn't involved with the selection/purchase process

Did implementation of Unique Learning System go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy Unique Learning System again?

Yes

Unique Learning System is a great resource for my class. I think News2You is the best feature as it allows differentiation, engagement on high-interest topics, and properly scaffolded activities. Reading the News2You issue is great for my class because it allows non-readers and readers alike to participate in the same activity as the program will read for some students. I would say it is less appropriate in Science and Social Studies. I don't like the formatting of the lessons and, while the reading levels are great, there are no immediate follow up questions or activities to check for understanding. I realize that I can create those myself, but I think Unique Learning System does a great job with the supporting visuals. I would also love to be able to put whole sentences into SymbolStix and have them generate visuals automatically. It is tedious to go back and forth between typing something and providing the accompanying visuals on a word by word basis.
