Overall Satisfaction with Unique Learning System

I use Unique Learning System (ULS) with News2You in my classroom for exceptional needs students as the primary modified curriculum to provide age appropriate and high interest material at ability appropriate differentiated levels for students with unique learning needs. I find the Unique Learning System units challenges my students with state standard aligned content and concepts. The News2You weekly news stories provide high interest reading that keeps my students engaged.

Pros

  • state aligned standards
  • incorporates content in history, social studies, and science
  • incoporates applicable life skills connections
  • gives options for on-line and hands-on learning

Cons

  • I'd like to see more relatable presentation for unit 25
  • beef up the math to provide easier to follow lesson plans and more concepts that build skills
  • beef up the materials for phonics instruction, literary topics such as genres, and writing
  • provides a framework to base weekly lesson planning
  • provides varied material for history, science, social studies, and life skills
  • has potential to help with IEP planning
The planner in Unique Learning System is very helpful. I use it to assign materials to students in advance when planning for the next week. The PDF options are helpful for learnings who need hands on materials. The Unique Learning System units have simplified my lesson planning by providing a yearlong scope of materials that are engaging and aligned to standards. I don't have to create everything!
I have seen growth in student vocabulary, word recognition, comprehension, and interest in topics beyond their daily life that has stimulated a desire to learn. When paired with News2You, I find I can keep my students engaged and excited about what we are doing in the classroom. Unique Learning System has opened up accessible content to my students that I did not have materials for in the past.
I still find it difficult to track student progress within Unique Learning System using unit checkpoints. Scores seem to disappear and I end up giving pre-tests again at the end for some students. I need a step by step visual for using GPS and how to use it to plan for IEPS. I find it difficult to change student modifications on the spot when I see the student can do more on a given day with less support. Planning for math is more difficult for me - the units seems disjointed and without comprehesnive lesson planning support. Recipes and Experiments are difficult - many fails from recipes or experiments that don't seem to be classroom tested. It is expensive on a teacher's budget to run trials for expensive recipe ingredients.
I always thought they were complimentary parts of the same curriculum. Unique Learning System provides more comprehensive content with life skills applications. News2you provides high interest material that sparks learning. Literacy concepts for sequence, main idea, and fact/opinion are more clear in News2you. Unique Learning System provides exposure to science, social studies, government, and history. News2you provides exposure to world events and awareness of community, country, and global issues.

Yes

Would you buy Unique Learning System again?

Yes

My students enjoy Unique Learning System units and are highly engaged. It is very good for comprehension, state aligned standards, and exposure to content for history, social studies, government, and science. I love the flexibility of using on-line and hands-on options. I find I have to creatively use the curriculum as a basis for teaching lessons, while supplementing with additional or teacher made materials to expand on skills and concepts. It is wonderful to have the framework to lean on, but the Math portion seems to need the most supplementation.
