Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Backup for Azure

As we began to deploy systems in Azure we knew we needed a backup solution. Since we use Veeam B&R for on-premises systems it was a no brainer to use Veeam for Azure. The policy based backup makes it easy to ensure new systems are automatically captured without needing to adjust backup jobs every time.

Pros

  • Policy based backup
  • Snapshot retention
  • Backup retention

Cons

  • Unaware of systems restored from on-prem. This causes me licensing issues when running DR testing events.
  • Excellent feature having predicted cost of backups
  • Saves administrators time on configuring backups
  • Deployment was quick and straightforward
The ease of use and deployment is easily one of my favorite features of Veeam Backup for Azure. I was able to get the system up and running in about an hour. Policies configuration is easy to understand as well, so targeting specific systems, resource groups, or tags for capture in backups is also easy to setup.
Veeam Backup for Azure is the first and only cloud backup product we've used. So far I've seen no reason for us to explore other other options.

For our purposes I can't particularly find any shortcomings of Veeam Backup for Azure. It has been working well for our needs for a few years now. Maybe for someone with a larger cloud footprint or more complex needs, or maybe someone who wants to be able to deploy and configure the appliance using infrastructure as code it may not be as practical.

Using Veeam Backup for Azure

2 - Both users of Veeam Backup for Azure are members of the IT department who focus on administration of systems.
2 - Very rarely are there issues with the system. The most needed skill is just product use knowledge, familiarity with the UI.

  • Automatic capture of new systems for backups
Plainly, the product just works. I don't have to babysit it.
