Why we chose Veeam Backup for Azure over Rubrik and Cohesity

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We assumed Azure would automatically back up our data, but later learned otherwise. Veeam was able to be used across on-prem and Azure, centralizing management.

In replacement of native Azure backup which seems to cost an arm and a leg. Azure native backup also seems to balloon quickly with storage growth. We use Veeam Backup for Azure and had more reliable pricing.

Pros

  • Centralized management between cloud and on-prem
  • Reliable and predictable pricing
  • Protection against accidental deletion

Cons

  • Limited support for Azure features that are still in preview
  • Cannot create repositories in accoutns with Azure Data Lake Storage or blob provisioning enabled
  • Granular database restore is missing

Return on Investment

  • Improved resilience against cyber attacks and accidental deletion
  • Faster recovery times

Veeam Backup for Azure was the simplest solution for us and just works!

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Since we have migrated our production workload to Azure we are using Veeam to backup our azure vm's, databases and Azure storage accounts. This gives us the peace of mind knowing that we are protected in case of an issue or needing to roll back something that went wrong. The backups are easily configured and easy to restore. We like the Veeam product better than the built in backups with Azure.

Pros

  • Very easy interface
  • very fast in completing backups
  • Fast implementation and setup
  • almost self explanatory when setting up

Cons

  • the only thing I wish that Veeam would do is the ability to combine all services in one platform. We have another backup solution we use for on prem backups to an offline cloud backup source. I wish Veeam had a solution like this, they are implementing Azure resources for backups currently and store in AWS so there is a separation of where data is stored and is offline with ransomware protection. Maybe one day.

Return on Investment

  • Being able to restore a workload within minutes is a very big positive
  • The storage and implementation of Veeam is cheaper than Azure backups and storage
  • We like the security we feel with having our backups readily available and knowing they will work.

Druva Data Resiliency Cloud

Veeam as a true viable backup solution

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use Veeam Backup for Azure more for a storage repository. It helps with cost because the cost of storage for a Rack of drives cost more than cloud storage on Azure. It reliable and very quick to recall data as needed. Also, you can get results realtime. This solution seem to be better than the AWS solution. Both were easy to setup.

Pros

  • Easy setup
  • Integrates well with on prim solution
  • Migration from on prim to cloud was seemless

Cons

  • Integration into Veeam for Azure without logging into Azure
  • One place to view volumes
  • One place to configure/Delete backups/view backups for Azure

Return on Investment

  • Time of having to fix missing backups due to storage has gone down
  • Time monitoring backups to make sure the run gone down
  • Business loss or not being able to perform DR exercises also went down

Fantastic Veeam Product

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I utilize Veeam Backup for Azure as an offsite backup location that can easily be restored from virtually anywhere. I've tested restoring to on premise locations as well as cloud locations and the application works perfectly to fit our needs. Everyone is worried about not being able to keep their data safe, but you easily can keep your data safe when sending the data to Azure as well as your other backup locations.

Pros

  • Ease of Use
  • Fast and Simple Restore
  • Ease of Setup
  • Securely Migrates Backups

Cons

  • Built-in WAN Acceleration
  • Better naming convention in Azure
  • Ability to pick and choose VMs to send instead of entire storage location
  • Ability to assign multiple storage locations in a single job instead of multiple.

Return on Investment

  • This has prevented longer outages due to installing updates that have broken server functionality. Instead of rolling back updates and hoping for the best, you can immediately restore from your backup and resolve the issue quicker.
  • Cost savings due to only needing two connectors but can store data anywhere you choose with Azure locations.
  • Definitely resource saving instead of taking manual backup of infrastructure and databased to move them offsite via external hard drives or tape.

Does what it says on the tin

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

After we moved the majority of our data to the cloud, Veeam Backup for Azure has become the backbone of our backup strategy. While the nature of cloud storage has drastically cut down on our need for day to day file restores as users can generally find and restore files from the version history or online recycle bins themselves, Veeam Backup for Azure is still vital for longer term data recovery and larger scale disaster recovery like ransomware attacks.

Pros

  • Consistency
  • Straightforward
  • Does what it says on the tin

Cons

  • An "include new groups by default" checkbox would help for teams backup

Return on Investment

  • Necessary for insurance coverage (cloud snapshots are not a backup)
  • Less tech time spent fighting interface to recover users' files
