Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We were in need of a Backup Solution for our M365 Environment. We were already a satisfied Veeam customer (Backup & Replication) so the jump to their Microsoft 365 Backup Solution was a no-brainer. We use it to back up our entire M365 Tennant (All mailboxes, OneDrives, SharePoint, and teams channels).

Pros and Cons

Pros

More Restore options than SaaS competitors (Save to MSG, to PST, to the original mailbox).
The ability to use Blob Storage as a target destination.
The Teams backup solution is the most complete we tested so far.

Cons

Backing Up "Public Folders" is quite a hassle, but this is not the "fault" of Veeam but the way Microsoft exposes this data.
No option to integrate the product into their other solution, it would be great to access M365 backup in the Backup & Replication application.

Return on Investment

Besides using the product ourselves we also provide it in rental/MSP formulas to our customers. This gives us recurring revenue on a setup that requires very little time & effort from our end.

Veeam for Microsoft Office 365 Needs Assessment

Because Microsoft/M365 does not provide any actual backup methods for data in M365 (mailboxes, Teams, OneDrive....) it became very clear that we and our customers needed a solution in which we could backup this data.

Usability

As with other Veeam Products the usability is top notch

Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 Data Access

Because we are an MSP that offers customers a "complete" solution we do the restores when the customers request it. Therefore we have not implemented this feature yet.

Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 Restore Flexibility

The many options to restore is one of the main draws for us to this product. All the SaaS-based M365 Backup solutions we used do not offer the extensive restore options the Veeam product provides.

Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 Favorite Features

The option to restore a full mailbox to a PST for archival needs has been useful for us several times. The ability to store our M365 backups to Blob storage provides us with very flexible storage options so we do need to worry about providing local storage for the backups.

Alternatives Considered

Cove Data Protection

Veeam has much more restore options and also has the option to make more granular options regarding Backup schedule (frequency, timing, ...)

Support Rating

Veeam Support is the best support in the business, this is for all their products. All interactions are with highly skilled support people who know their product and also the platform the product runs on. So when the issue is not really a Veeam issue but is more related to the Windows Server or SQL Server they will still provide solutions on how to mitigate the issue. This is a very refreshing approach...

Likelihood to Recommend

Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 is the most complete Microsoft 365 backup product we offer to our customers (MSP). It has the most restore & backup options and is following the M365 innovations pretty rapidly. The area where the product is less appropriate is for environments with Public Folders, but this is more the fault of Microsoft and their implementation of this feature. It is a good thing that Public Folders in Microsoft365 are a pretty niche/legacy feature that is not used very often.
