Veeam Backup & Replication
Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Backup & Replication
It began as a test of putting our Office 365 cloud environment on a regular cloud backup using Veeam, and after some time ended up as our entire system backup software! It does cloud backup so well that we took the chance moving to our local and DR backup and replication and we are very pleased.
- Virtualized workloads
- Endpoints and physical servers running Windows & Linux
- Cloud-hosted VMs within AWS or Azure
- In addition to back up, we also replicate some of these workloads
- In addition to back up, we also snapshot some of these workloads
- Enterprise UNIX servers running Solaris & IBM AIX
- Enterprise applications such as Oracle or SAP HANA
- NAS filers
- “Instant” recovery or portability between platforms (physical > virtual > cloud-hosted)
- Automating test restores to validate recoverability
- “Instant” recovery or portability between platforms (physical > virtual > cloud-hosted)
Pros
- Makes your managers happy when backups do not fail
- Keeps data safe in almost any place you need them
- Replication to cloud is a DR site dream
Cons
- Fixes could be pushed out quicker
- Costly at the higher price range
- More features could be implemented
I believe the majority of our workloads are now covered by Veeam including all local servers to local disk, as well as replication to backup site and cloud based high priority servers. This is NOT what we had originally planned when we tested just a few cloud backups but we expanded to the full suite once we saw how good it was.
- Saving time and effort with making and checking backups
- Some money saved on reducing our backup systems to a single one
- Lots of features give us new options we never had before
We had been fed up with the other tools we had but after just testing the cloud features we knew we had a winner. We were not in a position to move all at once but as tools came up for renewal we decided to move everything we could over to Veeam.
The cloud features are far better than we expected. So good that we ended up moving more systems to it than we thought. Finally started using all the options in the cloud and could not have been more satisfied. I would recommend users getting the full package if they have any interest in the other features.
This is an area we've yet to dabble much in besides doing a test system of IT's shares. It's not that it doesn't work well, it definitely does, but more that we have a TON of work to do to get it ready for prime time. When we replace File share servers we definitely move them each over to Veeam.
