Veeam Backup & Replication
Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Backup & Replication
We currently utilize Veeam Backup & Replication for our system backups for our Virtual Environment, as well as a few physical servers. We utilize both the backup and the replication feature, create immutable copies, and replicate both to a cloud environment as well as a 2nd datacenter. Veeam Backup & Replication allows for regular DR testing, and I've utilized the instant restore feature a couple of times on a corrupted VM - it worked perfectly. Highly recommend this for DR and a backup system.
- Virtualized workloads
- Endpoints and physical servers running Windows & Linux
- In addition to back up, we also replicate some of these workloads
- NAS filers
- License portability as your environment needs change
- Automating test restores to validate recoverability
- Immutable storage to protect against ransomware
- “Instant” recovery or portability between platforms (physical > virtual > cloud-hosted)
- Immutable storage to protect against ransomware
Pros
- Very Quick CBT snapshot backups
- Immutable storage backup and replication
- VERY FAST restores for excellent Business continuity
Cons
- Better help documentation within the program - you need to be an expert BEFORE a disaster strikes.

We currently have 20 VULs, utilizing between 16-19 typically. These protect a variety of physical and virtual servers in our environment.
- Switched from a cloud based provider to Veeam Backup & Replication, saving over 50% in year 1 and 70% thereafter year over year.
The cloud based backup we had - failed to recover a LOT of data on a physical server where we had a RAID die. I was tasked with replacing it with something that would work.
We aren't currently utilizing cloud workloads (only backup storage), but it is something I'm looking into for 2023 or 2024. I'm glad that the solution we have already supports it.
We have 1 NAS with non-critical data on it. Veeam Backup & Replication's current licensing structure makes it cost-prohibitive to use to back it up.
