Overall Satisfaction with vSphere
vSphere is being used for our entire City as a hypervisor. We currently have deployed 3 clusters and over 15 hosts on 6.5 configurations.
- It is the best hypervisor in my opinion.
- V-motion is the best hypervisor migration tool. Better than the Hyper-V live migration tool.
- Very intuitive.
- Its licensing model can be pricey.
- vSphere got rid of its client based administration tool and has gone fully web UI based since 6.0 and that has made many people mad.
- Tool packages for hardware can sometimes be a pain.
- Migration from Hyper-V to VMWare cost the business over 200k. However, up-time of servers went from ~.999 to ~.9999. Over the years that VMWare is used, it could pay for itself if you're let's say a credit card company or airline or eBay or something where your transactions are vital.
vSphere is superior to Hyper-V. I have had several issues in Hyper-V that I have not experienced in vSphere. vSphere just works. It costs more money, but it works. I am curious to see the outcome of the Microsoft licensing model as they try to take on VMWare with Hyper-V. Eventually, Microsoft may be the way to go as the Microsoft Server licensing models change to benefit Hyper-V. At this time, VMWare vShere is the go-to.
