What is Planview ProjectPlace?

ProjectPlace is the collaborative work management solution from Planview that brings teams together to get work done. Whether a team is down the hall or on the other side of the globe, ProjectPlace aims to provide everything needed to set direction, communicate, execute tasks, track progress, and ultimately achieve goals. A key value proposition is to be one tool designed to work together rather than a collection of point solutions.

The vendor says the the product is built with teams of all size and complexity in mind, from virtual teams of five to entire global enterprises with tens of thousands of active users. ProjectPlace can be started in minutes and scales as new team members join. Since work types vary, ProjectPlace is flexible to fit the job at hand – traditional projects, roadmaps or unstructured work where groups just need to “get stuff done”.

We currently use Project Place in connection with PPM Pro to track medium to large IT Projects, ranging from software development to infrastructure. Our teams track sprints or milestones, enter their tasks, points, or sizes, and track deadlines and dependencies. We also track in Project Place, related to PPM Pro, the time spent on tasks and team velocity.
  • Document management.
  • Ease of access via web interface.
  • Board visualization.
  • Team sharing of information.
  • Ability to track RAID and integrate with other tools.
  • Boards need additional work (see Agile place boards for reference).
  • Automation of tasks is only for basic tasks.
  • Reporting inside the project place is very basic. Need the ability to customize widgets within the tool.
Planview Project Place is suited for medium projects with smaller teams or participants. It becomes difficult to handle a large number of team members or dependencies. The interface is very intuitive, which allows users to grasp the board interface quickly.

We use Planview Projectplace to manage traditional waterfall and SCRUM projects. It's used throughout the organization and helps to centralize project work. Most employees are in different geographical locations, so it makes tracking project work easier. We use English language only.
  • The boards are very easy to use to track project work.
  • It's easy and quick to create workspaces for a team.
  • Creating and managing tasks is easy.
  • Bidirectional connection with PPM Pro.
  • More control of font colors and the ability to bold text on cards.
  • More control over email notifications.
It has been great for managing traditional projects and sprints. Once the pandemic started, we started it using it much more.

Planview is used to manage projects, documents, persons working, and to interact with each other.
With the help of Planview Projectplace my organization is working efficiently by managing all things in one place. It is also accessible by every device, whether it be a laptop, mobile phone, or tablet. In the past, it was used on a trial basis by a few teams. Gradually it has been put into use by the whole organization. Also, teams located in different nations interact on it. In my organization, it is used in the English language.
  • It manages teams very well. Teamwork is the key to success and with the help of [Planview Projectplace], the job is done easily, without any hassle.
  • Everyone involved in a project can very efficiently view the progress or what's next in the pipeline.
  • The most enjoyable feature is the charts. With the help of charts, projects/teams become easy to manage.
  • Another particular feature worth receiving acknowledgment is kanban boards. With the help of it, visualization becomes so simple.
  • Sharing documents, because interacting with teammates is efficient with the help of it.
  • The most important thing is pricing. Big organizations can still afford to use it, but small startups or mid-level companies will have to think twice before choosing it.
  • User Interface (UI) is not as crispy as compared to other tools in the market. The UI can definitely be improved.
  • Slow internet ruins this software usage completely. A lighter version should be available to use when your network is slow.
  • Without proper training, it would be messy to understand and use the software at its full potential. So good training should exist.
It is well suited when a team has to work remotely, or when multiple teams are working on the same project in different countries. Some work in the office, while others have outdoor jobs, so it is easy to access from a phone too. Planview Projectplace is not very beneficial for small organizations, as most of their work can also be managed by different tools, and to cut costs they should select different options.

Really liked the Kanban board and Gantt chart features. I have a team of 4 from 4 different locations and them being able to see real-time status updates and be able to collaborate right away saves so much time. We hardly have to meet on Zoom anymore! Document management is another great built-in feature—so useful!
  • Kanban boards - visual and no brainer to use, it's easy to the "do, doing, done" overall view of things.
  • Document management - really like that this is in-built.
  • Time-tracking - great to keep an eye on how much time is spent on what.
  • The user interface could be definitely be upgraded and streamlined. It's just not that pleasing to look at compared to other similar software out there.
  • It's not easy to link and manage different projects that fall under an overall umbrella.
  • No proper offline solution. You need to be always connected to a good, strong internet to use it properly.
I'd recommend it for large-scale projects with teams of more than 10 people. I don't think it's suitable for less than 10 people, there are many features that won't be used.

Planview Projectplace is a workload and project management platform that we use in our organization to measure and manage the progress of projects under implementation and ensure completion on set timelines. The platform is available for use across our departments, and they are at liberty to use it in implementing their projects on time without many hurdles. It's accurate and has helped us eliminate the business problem of relying on manual methods in project implementation.
  • Hastens the process of tracking and implementing the projects elevating their completion.
  • Helps in simplifying the intricate process of project planning and implementation for better usage.
  • The vendor offers reliable customer support services enabling intuitive usage across board.
  • Sometimes it's affected by poor internet connections delaying its perfect usage.
Planview Projectplace is insightful and fits well in a scenario where a company aims to amplify and automate the process of project management and ensure that the process is successful and achieved on time. It's intuitive and offers a simple dashboard for accessing all the project functionalities from the web anywhere anytime.

ProjectPlace is used by 110 users, mainly in support roles in the "back-offices" of our bank to organize their projects, collaborate with their teams, and provide status reports to management. It provides a single location for all project data; helps standardize how projects are run; adds visibility; and works for all levels of project experience within our company. Team members are mainly located in 3 non-branch locations within the city; we are a local community bank. We use English in this software.
  • Conversations have moved from email folders to the shared conversation board, or to a visible comment section on a document, card (work assignment) or activity.
  • All documents for the project are in a single workspace for the project and can be linked to any card, conversation or activity for convenience. You can have version control of documents allowing easy collaboration and document review assignments with tracking.
  • Visual representation of the project using boards and cards. You define the workspace uniquely for each project or use a custom template. Everyone on the team can see task assignments and their completion path as they move from column to column across the board. Columns are user defined and cards can be assigned labels (color coding) and/or grouped by project plan activity. Or, you can do a traditional project plan and Ghant Chart.
  • Projects can be done at any level of complexity and therefore handled at any level of PM experience.
  • Plan tab can be confusing for a new user. There are milestones and activities and they mix them up and don't understand one date or two. If I could give them the option to only use one or the other and add a combined view, this may help.
  • I find the online documentation and brief videos fantastic, but not everyone is a self-learner. The provided training at purchase was horrible; it was outsourced to someone who knew less than I did because the company was based in Sweden. It may have improved in the US with the addition of offices in the US and the connection to Planview.
  • Reporting to management is extremely limited. I can export status boxes to Excel but that is about all. ProjectPlace also uses Power BI but the Portfolio level fields were not included yet.

Great for inexperienced project managers; most of our project managers have a full-time role in addition to their project work.

You can track workload by cards or hours or days but since our PMs are not doing this full time, we don't encourage this. Some of our tech folks are tracking their time on cards or time reports because they are available.

Needs more upper management dashboard views. Currently I can add a team view for middle managers to keep them from being added to every project their staff works on, but it doesn't roll up and staff members can only be on one team view. This is a new feature that I'm sure will grow this year.
