Good for letting your investors, employees and others know at a glance how your company is doing. The interface is clean and organized well. I just wish more of the app's functionality was available for testing and implementation. "Coming soon" is not really encouraging when we already have been waiting for a year or more.

Gephi

Gephi is wonderfully suited for research and conducting follow-up social network analysis that GIS is too cumbersome for. It is less-well-suited for spatial statistical modeling, which is easier in programs like GeoDA, Stata, R, and GIS.

Pros

  • Grouping several apps in one place for easy viewing.
  • Clean dashboard interface that looks uncluttered when viewing several apps at once.
  • Setting up the apps is a breeze when the platform supports them.

  • Gephi enables me to create beautiful, publication-ready graphical images.
  • I can write programs to be incorporated in Gephi.
  • The open-source platform provides versatility and the GUI allows easy use.

Cons

  • Integration with apps that are listed. Some of them are not supported yet and it seems the wait is taking longer than I'd like.
  • iPhone support. It would be nice to have this in the app store. Not available as of 04/25/2018.

  • In Gephi, there's really not a great export feature for the map you've created. Screenshots can be taken, but you can't currently export to an image or HTML document.
  • All the interactivity is lost if not using the Gephi file itself. A screenshot does not have nearly the impact as if you could move the edges and nodes around like you can in the software itself.
  • All the text label size is edited by one master control. It would be nice if this would size proportionately with the size of the nodes or if this could be a manual selection at times. With all the edges flowing around, sometimes it's hard to read the text if it's too small or too large.

While Gephi isn't perfect, it's a powerful tool for mathematical graph modelling that's hard to find in other products, particularly by way of its interface. It grants non-software developers access to a point-and-click way of creating accurate, beautiful visualizations that would normally take hours in other applications. The fact that it allows for live streaming data is also something that's hard to come by, at least for visualization software

Gephi is very intuitive and the fact that it shows its process helps the user understand what's going on. However, the animation features can really slow it down and there isn't a way to shut them off. Furthermore, the failures on saving mean you frequently have to start over. These problems disrupt the workflow and can be frustrating.

Support was helpful in the beginning but no longer needed because I didn't use the software as much. The experience that I did have with support was very friendly but not enough to give a good review. If the support team was called for initial setup, video chat or messenger app was used.

Alternatives Considered

I actually chose QuickBooks (currently using) and Method (used for a month) before deciding that 9 Spokes is just good for looking at a few apps in one place. I'll keep checking back with them to see if they have improved. I wouldn't be surprised if 9 Spokes improves their product within the next 6-12 months.

There are tools out there that can probably handle much larger datasets, however. Gephi's strength is in its ease-of-use and out-of-the box readiness. Again, there's literally no code writing required to do some pretty powerful things. Being able to open the product and get to work makes up for a short list of shortcomings. Long story short, I chose Gephi because I could do something with it, rather than trying to remember what I learned in a Perl scripting class 15 years ago

Collaboration and Sharing

Access control capabilities are OK. Ease of sharing is great because the app design is made special for that purpose. I haven't dove that far into the app enough to generate reports. Formatting is very flexible because 9 Spokes allows the user to customize how the info is displayed. Security or lack thereof is not a factor for me so I am unable to give feedback on security.

For individuals with Gephi installed, this is pretty easy to do. However, in our organization not many colleagues have this installed, so the only way to produce reports is with a screenshot or exported image file. This loses much of the interactivity of the software and many of the key insights that can be uncovered by playing with the nodes and edges.

Data Integration

I gave 9 Spokes a five because the range of data sources is minimal. Ease of merging data from disparate sources is pretty good for the ones they do support. I just want to have more apps available for arranging on their nice looking interface. Perhaps next year my review for 9 Spokes will be better than 5

The upload process into Gephi is pretty streamlined. We upload csv files and the software is able to make the links easily and generate the graphs. The only way this could be better is if it connected directly to SAS, R, etc. or the databases themselves through SQL or a similar querying language (similar to Tableau)

  • I have only used the product for education purposes. I will not be the best person to provide details about ROI and business efficiency and customer service. I was personally very excited about the tool and am continuing my work on the tool.
