Actian DataConnect

The choice to use Actian DataConnect really comes down to pricing and the type of integration project you are performing, specifically with the requirements, whether you want the integration to be on-premise or in the cloud, can you install agents on your servers etc. For integration tools it runs head to head with its competitors.

Talend Open Studio

Talend is best with its UI and is easy to use. I have solved a business case with the transformation components, and also used the Talend error handling and exception components. It works best and gives easy solutions without much coding involved.

Pros

Actian DataConnect

  • The large connector base for DataConnect is outstanding. However even when they do not have a custom connector, they have a web services Invoker which allows you to connect to any web services.
  • The underlying scripting language is Visual Basic-ish. Very easy to start.
  • The product has been around a long time, through multiple company acquistions, and still is a competitive player via pricing.
  • Support team is awesome.
  • Large user community.

Talend Open Studio

  • Talend Open Studio provides a great and easy to use interface. It is conveniently used to extract, transform and load the data and we can simply email business users though it is not a reporting tool. Also, it is easy and quick to install and get started.
  • Custom code writing is a good feature which makes it even more flexible to use.
  • MDM and data quality is also one of the key features of talend and helps to manage data well. MDM is easily available under GPL open license.
  • Wide range of transformation components to play around and get the work done easily.

Cons

Actian DataConnect

  • Integration Manager needs better scheduling improvements. Like dependencies, and not running a process again if the prior run is still running.
  • New connector development does not seem a priority.

Talend Open Studio

  • Standard source control practices do not work the way you would expect them to when using Talend. The intermediate items that Talend creates in the workspace are not simply a set of .java files, so you must take extra care of managing your workspace directory. This means you must backup your entire workspace directory prior to upgrading the version of Talend you are using for active development. Granted, we should do this even when upgrading a basic Eclipse environment, but it is far easier to get back where you started if Eclipse gets messed up, than if Talend gets corrupted somehow. This is a key concern for developers, and gaining comfort with this is a matter of time committment to a single tool, which developers are hesitant to commit. There are options to help this in the team and enterprise versions of the tool, but those have their own barriers to adoption, money and agreement across a development team.
  • It could take 2-3 weeks for an seasoned Java developer to gain comfort in how to best implement processes using Talend. It is worth it if you have a lot of projects that start, go on back-burner, then resume, or if you are switching between integration processes and wanting a standard way to build your programs

There is no licence requirement for Talend Open Studio. So, this is not relevant question. However, if you are asking whether we will use Talend in future. Yes. We will continue to use it. It's very powerful free tool which caters to all our extra, transform, load capabilities. We just love Talend for it's great functionality and ease of use.

Talend Open Studio is based on Eclipse and is full of redundant procedures to do one thing, like when installing libraries. Sometimes I cannot manually download the libraries that it can't find.

Many times, Talend freezes. When you give a cancel command, it takes several minutes to stop. It also takes a great toll on our PC with 16 GB of ram and I7 CPU, even in idle status. If you are downloading Maven Jar/Libraries, you cannot do anything and have to wait until the task is finished.

Talend Open Studio is free and we are not using the enterprise version which comes with licence and support. So, mostly depend on the open source community for any issues that we face. The document is good and we didn't have to use any support so far. We did evaluate the enterprise version and so far sticking to the free version.

Alternatives Considered

Actian DataConnect

As I stated earlier, DataConnect makes a head-to-head run against the others. It has advantages and disadvantages compared to the competitors. The choice really comes down to pricing and specific requirement needs for the project you are planning. Questions such as On-premise or Cloud, Security, and Specific Connectors available will drive your decision.

Talend Open Studio

I prefer to use Talend Open Studio over SQL Server Integration Services because of the ease of use and wider connection library opportunities. By leveraging Talend Open Studio we are able to connect to a much wider set of source data as well as rapidly designing and deploying solutions for ETL.

  • Our customer likes the consistent reliable integrations we have built so we [got] a definite return on investment.
  • Problems are fairly easy to handle and rework.

  • We are losing days of our project having to setup it.
  • Not compatible with Big Data or inconsistent support.
