ActiveBatch Workload Automation

I used to work in a company that only used SQL Server Agent to handle imports and exports of ETL data. ActiveBatch is far more powerful and easy to use, so I definitely would recommend it. I would think of three questions: (1) Do you handle a large volume of exports and imports in a given week? (2) Do you need a lot of configurable options, such as with scheduling? (3) Do you utilize a variety of ETL processing tools (such as GlobalScape EFT and Microsoft SSIS) but want one tool to work with them all? If yes to those questions, then ActiveBatch would well fit the bill for you then.

Broadcom Automic Automation (formerly CA Automic Automation Platform)

Automic One Automation Platform (formerly CA Automic Automation Platform) is well suited for applications such as SAP and operating systems such as windows, Linux. It can be used to automate these applications as it can be done through remote function calls and business application peripheral interfaces. It can also be used to run scripts on remote machines, which further enables automation of ms office applications such as ms Excel and MS Word.

ActiveBatch's usability is where it shines. It is pretty straight-forward to learn and administer. Our engineers like it because you can use a GUI to manage it or leverage the command line & api's. You can also create templates or clone existing "jobs" so you don't have to recreate the wheel. It is easy to chain jobs together to make them run in a specific sequence as well.

We have been pretty happy with ActiveBatch support so far. Luckily, we have not had any major issues with it - so we haven't logged a lot of support tickets. The response time to tickets is about average and the level of expertise of the support engineers seems about average as well. Our sales team has been helpful in getting faster responses when necessary as well.

Alternatives Considered

ActiveBatch Workload Automation

N/A - It was already in place when I was on the scene, but like I said earlier it is much more powerful than SQL Server Agent and probably anything we would've come up with from scratch using .Net. However if your needs are small and traffic is light, then maybe SQL Server Agent or something smaller and less powerful (and less expensive) than ActiveBatch would work just fine.

Since other tools are all user interface based, they are prone to errors in terms of application exception, and the dependencies are comparatively higher for the automation to run successfully. This is not the case with the Automic One Automation Platform (formerly CA Automic Automation Platform) as the contact with application happens at the network layer and does not depend on the user interface of the application.

Return on Investment

ActiveBatch Workload Automation

  • I have not been involved in the purchase or contract negotiation of our Active Batch purchase, therefore am unable to comment on the ROI.

  • Hours of server operations given over to end-users.
  • Single pipelines for job plan execution reduced the operational overhead.
