Amazon CloudWatch

It's well suited where you rely on cloud services to run mission critical applications. I think it'd be less suitable in a scenario where the information you store on your servers is what your customers expect you to manage directly.

Zabbix

Zabbix is well suited in an environment where connectivity is possible between all hosts in the network. Zabbix agents need to be able to "phone home" to the Zabbix server or a proxy. If connectivity is not possible between the agent and the server (typically the server is going to live in the "trust" section of the network, rather than a DMZ), Zabbix may not be a good fit. Zabbix is also appropriate in a cross-platform environment.Zabbix is also highly appropriate in shops that are interested in building their own monitoring infrastructure, rather than using a service. These services are obviously not free, but the time that you invest in Zabbix may make up for that monthly spend.

Cons

  • The interface is clunky.
  • The context sensitive help could be written more clearly.
  • I wish there were more options for arranging the dashboard interface to my specific needs.

  • High level management always wants a "dashboard", while Zabbix can provide several different views, there seem to be third party products to provide alternatives. Maybe a best of breed dashboard could be added to the base product.
  • Zabbix performance largely depends on the performance of the underlying database, it takes planing and good infrastructure to support large environments.
  • It is possible to break things accidentally when making configuration changes, using Update when you meant to Clone, maybe a few strategic "are you sure you want to change this" prompts would help.

Alternatives Considered

I can only speak to how it's positively benefited my organization. The problem was that hosting in-house servers is no longer a cost-effective solution vs. containerization in the cloud. But once you rely on hosting servers in the cloud you need a tool to manage every aspect of that including log monitoring, resource utilization, and application performance. Amazon CloudWatch is exactly the tool you need.

The choice was made about 6 years ago, but nothing recent has called that into question. I don't really remember the details of the original choice.

Return on Investment

  • Pro: We've reduced the cost of salaried employees need to run in-house servers by close to 50%.
  • Pro: We've reduced down time of any servers substantially.
  • Con: It's not quite automated and its usage requires training.

  • A 5 year "Linux team only" implementation leveraged automatic recovery scripts to eliminate a huge number of off hour wake-up tickets. Many problems were detected and automatically remediated before the old monitoring system ever detected the problem.
  • The ability to monitor almost anything you can imagine and script.
  • Quick one-off items and triggers can be deployed in a crisis.
  • Leveraging Puppet and The Foreman for server build and Zabbix for monitoring made it possible for system administrators to go from supporting about 40 servers each to 120 or more.
