Amazon SimpleDB

Well suited for: Games, Chat rooms, real time software like corporate events, marathons and so. Anytime and anywhere you could use a NoSQL DB you should think of SimpleDB.
As an arduous AWS user, Amazon SimpleDB easily integrates with EC2 and other AWS module; and if you are not an AWS user, you also have a fantastic tool that will solve the problem for which you are focused.

Couchbase

Couchbase is well suited in scenarios where cost plays a major role and the performance can't be compromised. It was the best option for us to replace a famous RDBMS because of licensi[ng] cost reason but boy were we happy about the performance or what. It certainly is not or less appropriate in the scenarios where there are resource constraints. You can't run too many Couchbase clusters on a single machine if it's not a beefy machine.

  • Proficiency to secure and isolate database information in a secure environment to prevent undefined access.

Couchbase

  • Community edition has various limitations, like [the] inability to view/edit documents over a certain threshold or inability to use various types of [optimized] indexes.
  • The indexes performance degrades when a certain number of mutations is reached.
  • The views creation can be quite slow and impacts the deployment speed for large buckets.

Couchbase has been quite a usable for our implementation. We had similar experience with our previous "trial" implementation, however it was short lived.
Couchbase has so far exceeded expectation. Our implementation team is more confident than ever before.
When we are Live for more than 6 months, I'm hoping to enhance this rating.

Performance for key-value is great. Indexing can be slow on large dataset, index rebuilds also can take long, especially in recovery situations. Although relational use case is fully supported and performance is good, architects and developers need to better refactor the applications and data model. Blind move from relational to Couchbase is not always smooth.

It integrates beautifully with AWS. In some projects we use SimpleDB while we use DynamoDB for others, according to the characteristics of the project. If the infrastructure is AWS, we always think of one of them.

Couchbase

While in this testing phase, the main feature of Couchbase is the mobile integration. Most of the one listed above use the same algorithm whether it is mobile or desktop. Couchbase offers their Lite version which has everything you need to use the Couchbase suite without having the bulkiness of the full suite.

So far, the way that we mange and upgrade our clusters has be very smooth. It works like a dream when we use it in concert with AWS and their EC2 machines. Having access to powerful instances along side the Couchbase interface is amazing and allows us to do rebalances or maintenance without a worry

  • N1QL's SQL-like syntax has made bringing new developers up to speed both easy and inexpensive.
  • The schema-less approach to data store has increased agility.
  • Operating at scale, Couchbase tends to be less expensive than major RDBMS solutions, especially once you implement high availability in RDBMS.
