AppDynamics

We execute various types of performance testing such as load testing, stress testing, endurance testing, and spike testing on the daily basis in various environments. It was tough to detect and monitor the performance issues for each type of performance testing, but using AppDynamics, it is possible to create a trend in bottleneck detection. When the performance testing projects integrated with CI/CD pipeline, then the AppDynamics plugin helps a lot. for example, if there is a performance degradation, it allows the job to be failed.

Foglight

Foglight NMS is great for up to about 1000 interfaces (a switch may have 48, a server may have 4), that's how they license the product. Being that the application and database are stored on the same server, the deployment costs are affordable. After about 1000 interfaces getting monitored, one may want to consider stepping up to a more robust product that offers higher availability/redundancy.

Pros

  • AppDynamics provides an excellent overview of all the interactions between all of your various applications, providing a high-level view of the overall health of the whole application and any interactions or elements that are unhealthy can be seen from here.
  • AppDynamics focusses on Business Transactions, rather than overall application or server performance, meaning you can quickly see if one part of the system is not working as it should, meaning production issues are shown clearly as isolated problems (if they are) rather than overall application health problems.
  • AppDynamics provides excellent functionality with regards to tracing coding exceptions - errors can easily be drilled down to the method or line of code that is problematic.
  • AppDynamics is hugely flexible allowing very fine grained configuration and customisation.

  • Foglight NMS is very light on resources given the amount of monitoring connectivity options it provides. It is one of the few that I've trialed in the past that offers SNMP v3 connections.
  • The dashboard is concise with the main areas of interest. It can be customized as well if you have a particular use case.
  • Setting up alerts is straightforward with the ability to set custom thresholds. Alert emails get sent by configuring a primary mail server with the option to add a backup mail server in the event of a primary mail server outage or connectivity issues.

Cons

  • It's just so complicated - it takes a while to get to grips with and needs careful thought and planning to get the most out of it. AppDynamics do provide excellent support for this though and will guide you.
  • It doesn't list out enough Database Transactions in the APM licencing model.

  • While the Linux agents mostly work out of the box with the remote node receiving the push, some newer Linux distributions may require some tweaking of the agent install script due to upstream software package changes.
  • The canned reports are adequate for high-level overviews but I would like to be able to further customize them to include specific information from the monitored nodes.
  • I wish there was an application to migrate the Foglight NMS application and database (which reside on the same server) to a new server or VM. They make you open a support case to accomplish that for which you need an active maintenance contract.

Alternatives Considered

I didnt like any of the functionality or the layout this application provided. I saw the growth with AppDynamics and the possible potential mainly because we have visibility to the actual application code. This is one of the best options by far to ensure the vendor fixes bugs in the code.

Foglight NMS is a Windows-based platform that is light on resources. Some products I've tried have large minimum requirements, which goes along with their large price tag. Foglight NMS is priced right and based on the interfaces of the devices that need monitoring. Foglight NMS was easy to install without having to worry about separate database servers and licenses that would go with them. The console is available in both thick client and web-based which makes it quite accessible from a variety of devices and systems. A fine product that requires not much maintenance once it is initially configured for your environment.

Return on Investment

  • It has had a positive impact because anytime there is an issue, we go to AppDynamics first to see what the root cause could have been.
  • We have been providing transaction snapshots to vendors for troubleshooting.
  • So far, I have had nothing but positive feedback from other team members on the functionality and how other team members are using the application.

  • As an affordable SMB offering, Foglight NMS is priced right and easy to use to monitor a heterogenous environment.
  • Being able to monitor server loads during various parts of the day help a company plan for growth to ensure revenue is not lost.
  • The alerts keep us on top of any server and network equipment issues so we can be proactive about our approach for maintaining maximum uptime.
