AutoCAD

I have used a large number of CAD and other drawing packages like TurboCAD, CorelCAD, DraftSight, Inkscape and CorelDRAW to name a few. Although there are a number of free and cheaper options, AutoCAD is the industry standard or benchmark, user friendly GUI (Graphical User Interface), online help is usually easy to get.

Civil 3D

Well suited:
  1. Simple and self-explanatory user interface.
  2. Inter usability between other software such as MicroDrainage and Bentley CivilStorm.
  3. Autodesk customer service.
  4. Easily customizable.
Not suitable: The software is still very resource intensive on the machines and often crashes when too much data is being shown. Though significant improvements have been made in other Autodesk software like Revit, older applications like AutoCAD and C3D seem to be stuck on old, inefficient source codes.

Pros

AutoCAD

  • The first thing I like about AutoCAD is that it has [a] very amazing and [self-explanatory] layout, which allows new users to learn swiftly. You don't have to [spend] minutes looking for the thing that you are looking for.
  • Another thing that I love about AutoCAD that you can work [in] great depths and details, like for me I have to work on engineering designs which require me to work as precisely and accurately as possible. I have to be very accurate in each [dimension] and curves because even a difference of a millimeter can cause disasters.
  • Another thing that I appreciate as an engineer using AutoCAD is its ability to calculate unknown dimensions automatically and I don't have to go to [the] field and measure these reading[s] manually and this means a lot to me as this saves me a lot of times and effort.

  • The best part of using Autodesk software is that all of its software is connected, which helps us to switch according to our project use.
  • Pipe Network Part Replacement is very easy. It analyze the gravity flow and recommends the size accordingly. It also helps to understand the pressure parts.

Cons

AutoCAD

  • It needs more help in 3D world, eventually some parametric support
  • Better connection with Revit or Inventor
  • Dynamic blocks could get some updates
  • Parameters can be more developed; excel capabilities could be added
  • Sheet set could be more evolved to support a workflow involving data management

Civil 3D

  • There is nothing to improve in Civil 3D, I personally use Autodesk products like Maya, max and other including Civil 3D and Autodesk has a separate R&D team for tools development which they do their jobs perfectly.

Because rarely we [would] rather wait for a whole year to update, sometimes the new updates don't bring many new features and we are still ok with the current version. Also the change of interface is always something that takes time for every partner in the company to get comfortable with. So those are the main reasons we may want to keep the same version.

I give this rating to truly reflect the utility of this tool as a weapon in the armory of every engineer who is out there to create something for generations to wow at. Being a civil engineer by education, I can appreciate the tool's complexity and utility which cannot be provided by any other tool in the market.

They have a vast open community, which has helped us understand Autodesk Civil 3D from the beginning. They have provided many templates and tutorials videos to our team due to that we can learn every new feature from them. Autodesk Civil 3D has also helped us to interconnect all its software in an internal bridge, which helps us switch between software as we need.

Alternatives Considered

AutoCAD

I have always used AutoCAD. Other than 3D draw and programs like a Publisher Blueprint, I have not used any other products. AutoCAD is far superior to either of those and is one of the most powerful programs out there. The things that my students learn are not very different from what a draftsman or an architect would do. We use AutoCAD as it is an industry standard when it comes to drafting.

There is nothing like Civil 3D stacks up against them, I personally use all this software but we this software because of our client demands. But I personally found no problem with each other’s software and obviously Autodesk team of research and development works really great and whenever you are stuck their backend team reaches you immediately and responds back asap.

Return on Investment

AutoCAD

  • AutoCAD has helped our smaller firm produce lots of finished products matching that of a much larger size firm. With its many features, we have been able to do so much more and meet deadlines that much faster.
  • Since we do use AutoCAD, we're able to work with many other engineering firms to collaborate together to complete various building projects.
  • We have many clients now who expect us to provide for them at the end of a project not just printed construction drawings but also the digital AutoCAD drawing so they can in turn use it for future modifications themselves.

Civil 3D

  • In term of accuracy our firm has some positive impacts , mainly in pipeline design.
  • When design changes have to be made: change any aspect of the corridor, whether alignment, profile, or any cross-section, and Autodesk Civil 3D automatically recalculates and redraws everything else affected by that change. Due to this, we can save more time.
