Overall Satisfaction with AutoCAD

We use AutoCAD to draft layout and materials plans for design. AutoCAD allows us to create construction documents that a contractor can then build from. It also allows for precision drafting which is very important in our field. It also lets us coordinate our drawings with other disciplines and update our own drawings with them.

Pros

  • Curved lines on a specified radius
  • External reference management
  • Showing what has changed in a drawing in the xref

Cons

  • Dimensioning
  • Annotative scales
  • References breaking
  • Efficient drafting
  • Xrefs
  • Cost of licenses is high
It is very usable once you understand the program. I believe there is room for improvement in the 2D to 3D modeling capability. We have to use other apps to 3D model and that can be time consuming and sometimes AutoCAD doesn't transfer work that well between apps. They can improve there.
AutoCAD is better for drafting construction documents than Rhino. The ability to draft blue print drawings and update them to the specificity we need is a big leg up. Rhino allows me to see the model in 3d instantly where will AutoCAD I need to use a program such as SketchUp to bring the drawing into 3 dimensions.

Do you think AutoCAD delivers good value for the price?

No

Are you happy with AutoCAD's feature set?

No

Did AutoCAD live up to sales and marketing promises?

No

Did implementation of AutoCAD go as expected?

No

Would you buy AutoCAD again?

Yes

It is well suited for drafting in plan view. If you are looking for exact drafting that is the best for you to use. If you are looking to sketch and design, I would recommend you do not use AutoCAD first and instead use another app before transferring your work into AutoCAD.
