So not everyone is in need of a smart AI checking their network metrics looking for issues before they happen or finding and alerting on problems that the network staff may not have noticed, but if you have the budget for it, it could be a huge time saver for your whole department.

I would have said 10 if they didn't kill the product. I know Blue Folder took a piece of this, but we never got into it and just changed to Auvik and PRTG.

Cons
Cisco
  • May require an implementer to get this set up and running.
  • For a software based service that you can run on your own VM's, price is still very high.
  • The first setup can be a bear and you will need much help from TAC.

  • Come back! After Dell purchased this, they ended support for it. In my experience, it was one of the better tools.
  • Integration with other systems, but again, it is EOL, so doesn't matter.
  • MiB library needs a refresh, but again, EOL.

We moved away from Solarwinds during the breach. Haven't touched them with a 10 foot pole since. We looked at Splunk but decided to stick with a Cisco product since we are a Cisco shop

Again, the main piece was config backups. That is a real big deal, when you are dealing with a lot of customers that don't have a change management process. So changes can be done to a networking device and we need to be able to review what it was one day and what it changed to the next. This happens a lot with internal IT departments, that break something and you support them as an MSP.

Return on Investment
Cisco
  • Loads of time saved diagnosing network issues.
  • Much effort saved having to determine network performance metrics by hand.
  • The Cisco brand is generally safe and trusted so you get that additional peace of mind.
