Cisco DNA Center

When you have relaxed calendar for migrating to [Cisco] DNA Center, it perfectly do the automation job. As setting it up very time consuming, it requires flexibility on operations. In a tight calendar, [Cisco] DNA Center migration is a stressful process. While it is the perfect tool as a network automation product with various vendor support, you may also need to consider is it fully compatible with your current devices on your network. As we were setting up a new infrastructure, we purchased all equipment compatible with Cisco's solution.

OpenNMS

I would recommend all system administrators use some form of network monitoring if they are not already doing so, and I'd definitely recommend people consider OpenNMS if they're shopping around. Small businesses will benefit from the low-cost of entry (it's free!), whilst getting all the enterprise features. Larger businesses can benefit from paid support plans.
However, there's no getting around the fact that you will require some advanced networking and sysadmin knowledge to get the most out of OpenNMS, or at least, be prepared for a steep learning curve. If you don't have the resources to devote this time initially, you may struggle.

Pros

Cisco DNA Center

  • Ease of automation and configuration templates make the future you very glad you did it!
  • The PnP for switches that allow to boot up and contact the network with a pre-configuration is so amazing. Makes life easy!
  • Integrates well with our ISE platform, they have really made it well worth the cost to have everything with the name CISCO on your equipment. All of their devices work so well with this software.

Cons

Cisco DNA Center

  • En el data Center, integrando los equipos que se encuentra en el corazon de la red y previniendo que esten actualizados // For Data Centers, integrating equipment that is the core of a network, and preventing them from being updated
  • En las diferentes areas del campus para poder monitorizar el funcionamiento de los dispositivos // Improving remote monitoring of devices
  • En la identificacion de problemas de seguridad de los dispositivos de red // Improving identification of network security issues

OpenNMS

  • We've had a few issues with delayed alerting.
  • I haven't quite figured out how to make topologies work yet, but I haven't spent a ton of time on it either.
  • We've also had a bit of trouble importing some MIBs, but that usually boiled down to working with the vendor to make sure we had the right MIBs and dependencies.

Usability

I really like DNAC because it builds overlay fabric without problem and it is really user friendly to manage, integrate with other vendors. But two things that I do not like and for me is a 9 are you can not save or archive device's configurations and the other is you must buy physical server.

Cisco DNA Center 9.0
Based on 37 answers
Cisco's customer support is always top-notch. Being able to call in, provide some basic information about the product, then getting on the phone with a tech that knows the product inside and out is a great asset. Many companies fall short in providing excellent customer support. I won't name names, but you can see that many companies struggle with customer support. Cisco has one of the best approaches to customer support in my opinion. After a call with a support representative, I don't find myself wishing something would change for the better.

Alternatives Considered

Cisco DNA Center

Meraki does what should be expected at it's price point, but it is geared to SMB. When it comes to enterprise networks, DNA Center is the clear path forward. It allows for more devices than just the ones it configures, it provides more customization and on boarding options, and the control stays within the organization. The DNA Center telemetry provides a more robust reporting than the Meraki dashboard, and again, the data stays on site. I see both being important in their own ways, but Meraki falls short in larger enterprises, and that is where DNA Center shines the most.

OpenNMS

OpenNMS's more attractive GUI and its price break were the main reasons our company chose to explore and use this product. However, it never managed to actually replace Nagios which had a much more established hold within the company. Perhaps we were over-monitoring, but our company claimed a $100k loss per hour of downtime.

Return on Investment

Cisco DNA Center

  • Efficient time spent elsewhere. I can spend my time troubleshooting other portions of the network instead of housekeeping current gear.
  • Assistance with inventory; it keeps an inventory of all the devices you add to it, so it can serve as an inventory of equipment if that's what you'd like from it.
  • Visibility; we can see more of the status of our gear, if it's unreachable, or if things are misbehaving the dashboard shows that there are irregularities.

OpenNMS

  • Initial adoption required quite a lot of resources and time to get everything right. Totally worth it for us; just be prepared for a gradual process that will get better and better with time.
  • Once setup and running smoothly, it provides us with all the reporting we could hope for, at near zero cost.
  • With OpenNMS, we're able to offer a much more reliable service to our customers, and spend a lot less time dealing with issues.
