Ease of management, especially SSIDs. Several years ago there were problems with Chromebooks getting updated configurations. We support a large school environment and would have had to reset all of these devices. We determined that we could easily setup a Open SSID to allow these devices to connect to. Once they were able to connect, they were able to access the updated Chromebook configurations which included resetting their SSID to the proper secured SSID. We could monitor connectivity to this temporary SSID to determine when devices were no longer connecting to it. Additionally in a school setting, we are able to modify/update SSIDs when needed (at least annually) and monitor access to SSIDs for private or guest access.

I am hard pressed to determine a situation where SonicPoint devices are a good fit. The signal strength of these devices are so poor that we had complaints from customers who switched from cheap, home class devices. The scenario that I could think of where SonicPoint devices would be appropriate would be a situation where companies are using a SonicWall firewall and are mandated to use wireless devices from the same company.

Cons

Cisco

  • There needs to be an easier way to see which devices are being heavier used, so as to determine needed adjustments.
  • It would be good to have more in-depth access to what locations connected devices are navigating to.
  • Cost. These devices could be a little more competitive if the cost were lower. Meraki prices itself out of some sales.

Cause its intuitive, very clear and easy of use (no brainer) interface. It's whole portfolio in one portal aproach. Also cause the new features cycle release and the cisco Meraki comprehension of WiFi market. Also cause the fastest deployment available on the market that also comes with a easy to scale platform adding features and services in the same interface thats unique and awesome.

      Usability

      Cisco

The Cisco Meraki MR web interface is best in class when it comes to network management. While some networking knowledge is needed to understand what you are doing, no specialized training in any one specific operating system is required to design a whole network.

      Support Rating

      Cisco

Meraki support is usually top notch. The are quick to respond and stick with an issue until it is resolved. One of the difficulties I've had with Meraki MRs is the limited ability the customer has in troubleshooting. Much of the more technical aspects of resolution can only be accessed by the Meraki support team, meaning dedicated IT teams are reliant on them when more complicated issues arise.

      Alternatives Considered

      Cisco

The Cisco Meraki MR line of products stacks well against legacy Cisco Aironet equipment and comes with the added benefit of being cloud managed. I also like the fact that traditional legacy Wireless servers are no longer needed since all Meraki equipment runs through the Meraki Cloud.

Ubiquiti products have been much more reliable than SonicPoint devices. Going forward, we will no longer install SonicWall devices. The ROI on these devices are definitely negative. I cannot recommend SonicPoint devices to anyone. We have been much happier with Ubiquiti devices since we started switching our clients to them.

      Scalability

      Cisco

Meraki's scalability has allowed us to open new sites with consistent rule sets and configurations without having to worry about mistakes being made due to human error. It is very quick and non disruptive.

      Return on Investment

      Cisco

      • For bigger organizations ROI is really good, because the network is always operational, and no time is spent fixing the network.
      • The users do not need to power cycle devices or do anything else, everything can be managed remotely from the Meraki dashboard.
      • For small businesses with only 1 AP, the ROI is not that great since a cheaper AP can do the same job, and it may need occasional reboot which the staff can do easily without any hassle.

      • These devices have had a negative impact on our reputation with customers.
      • A large amount of time was spent troubleshooting problems.
      • Multiple promises of improvement by salespeople were unfulfilled.
