Cisco Routers are great for voice gateways and for areas in the network that need dedicated routing boundry's isolated without complicating or increasing the fault domain. Cisco Routers are often too expensive for our customers with many sites that are needed for SRST, survivable remote site telephony. It would be nice if there were more options for customers to achieve SRST especially for school districts.

Cons
Cisco
  • I think there should be a bit more QA and testing done on new image releases. Some of the images released within the last couple years had more bugs than I expected. Thankfully, some of the bugs were just cosmetic in nature but could still confuse network engineers when troubleshooting certain issues.

Cisco
We are extremely likely to renew, as we have been very happy with our Cisco Routers for over 10 years. Their uptime as well as stable nature makes them ideal for us, as we are an industry that cannot afford downtime. We trust our partner to recommend our next model Cisco, when the time comes.

Support Rating
Cisco
Cisco support is very good. Of course, sometime you will run into support guy that isn't up to the task. Buf overall, the support system is well structure. You know if this support isn't able to help, you can esclate the situation to find another help. Also, their documentation is well developed and can be very useful.

When it comes to CIENA routes , we don't use the latest overlay technology EVPN in our CIENA metro environment. Because CIENA doesn't yet support the EVPN VPWS and EVPN VPLS services. We still relay on LDP based Pseudo wires for achieving L2VPN services in our metro aggregation. But Cisco Routers support this out of the box without any further complications.
