Convio Luminate (discontinued) vs. The Cayuse Suite

It does great with donor cultivation processes and the workflow feature is top-notch for automating processes. Where it does a less than stellar job is getting it to work more specifically for your organization. Often times building that kind of special feature costs a significant time and money investment and it is something that is hard to transfer when it's time to move to a new database.

Cayuse (SmartGrant) is well suited for institutions who have multiple grants and projects that need to be organized, tracked, and followed up with. The closing and sorting of projects is also helpful when using this software. Multiple signers also have access to approvals electronically which makes the process more simplified and accessible for all parties involved.

• The ability to sort through rfps easier would be helpful
• Being able to include feedback/comments on the process would be helpful for tracking and organizing from parties involved
• Understanding accessibility in a more clear way would be great

Support for the product is horrible; often support will have you bouncing between Blackbaud support and Salesforce support and it's very rare either are able to find simple solutions. Most of the time the solutions almost always cost money and hiring consultants which, for a smaller organization, means not being able to achieve proper solutions.

Of the databases I have used, Luminate CRM is my least favorite. However, it is powerful and large enough to function adequately for a large nonprofit; I couldn't say the same for some of Blackbaud's smaller products. We definitely need the full Luminate Suite (Luminate Online, Team Raiser, etc.,) to make it work, though - and we're constantly disappointed by the clumsiness of the way all the pieces interact.

Cayuse (SmartGrant) has been in place at our institution for a while and we wouldn’t examine using anything else because it has been easy to work with, access, and stay organized with. Cayuse (SmartGrant) is also used for our office of research and is separate from our development software to keep everyone organized.

• Uncertain; we have not collected data on this. Our Luminate package is quite expensive, though.

• Cayuse (SmartGrant) helps us bring in grants and track the award paperwork
• The award paperwork process and reporting is easily trackable
• Uploading documents like LOIs and proposals are simple
