CorelCAD

CAD software with 2D drawing and 3D design tools. Enhance your engineering and architecture designs with drawing constraints, text editing, and interactive design tools. Collaborating with colleagues and vendors is easy DWG files. It runs on both Windows and Mac OS which makes it versatile and at a much lower price than other CAD software.

Basic modeling is very quick and easy. I particularly like the top-down modeling approach and Onshape is architected with that in mind. Drawings are now much more fully featured and perform well, so no real issues there. I really like that we can share the environment within and outside the organization which allows for a high level of transparency with the project stake holders. We don't use the release cycle aspect of Onshape since the rest of our organization is based on files and using PDM for controlling and distributing them. We have discussed how we might use Onshape for that whole workflow, but until it is the primary CAD tool, will not likely pursue that for now.

Pros

CorelCAD

  • 2D and 3D mechanical drawings
  • Interchange with AutoCAD users and other CAD users.
  • Publish technical data sheets and drawings.
  • Creating PDF documents

Onshape

  • Cloud-connected - we never have to worry about updating our design computers or upgrade the software as the upgrades happen automatically every few weeks. We are always on the latest version and get access to the newest features.
  • Analytics, we are able to see how we are using the tool, how long projects are really taking to complete and how much time we are spending in the system.
  • Extensible, we are able to use FeatureScript and write functions for our own features. We have used this to automate repetitive tasks so that we save time on designing features that we use over and over.

Cons

CorelCAD

  • Movement for 3D designs.
  • Some tools could be easier to access.

Onshape

  • I would like to see more functionality and options for dimensioning drawings. Customizing text positioning can be critical to optimizing a layout that has a lot of tightly packed features, unfortunately, there are not many options.
  • Version history is great in theory, but it needs a search function to make it useful. Example: There is no way to find a list of changes to "Extrusion 1" without manually going through. And the problem is that my team and I use CAD as a development tool to get an idea into 3D space, then review details with the team once there is a visual. The result is hundreds to thousands of line items in the version history, so manual searching is not feasible.
  • I don't believe that branching is useful (yes I have reviewed the self-guided material about it, and have gone through the instructor lead training).

Familiarity and ability to work from any location. Also easy to cooperate with potential customers, existing customers, systems users, and fabricating shops. Most of the standard designs are now in On Shape and I would like to continue using it. It is easier to run versions to clarify imrovements to the previous designs

Corel's support has always been outstanding. Technical support is always available to assist with installation and licensing issues and there is generally additional free assistance for a time period after purchase. Corel also offers online tutorials and other self-help resources. Ongoing and available support is one of the outstanding features Corel has always provided.

Support is built in. It lets you take a screenshot and mark it up in the support system. It lets me easily share a document with support and they will generally investigate the issue promptly (within 24 hours, sometimes within an hour). Generally they can fix it quickly as well. I also submit feature requests this way as well and get feedback with that. No email needed! All within Onshape.

It takes time to get to know the software. It opens new possibilities in traditional design. Your team will need to collectively learn to think differently about workflow CAD has always been an individual endeavor; one model, one person at a time. Onshape frees design and supports innovation without worrying about broken links, blowing up mating structures, and misaligned hole patterns

Alternatives Considered

CorelCAD

Compared to the big companies like solid works or Solid Edge for 3D modeling, it has most of the basic tools and it is easier to use. It has more tools than some of the smaller companies but still provides the versatility of large brand-name software. CorelCAD offers an attractive alternative for those on a tight budget.

OnShape is based in the cloud, which comes with all the benefits one would expect vs. desktop based software. The two main things that lead me to select OnShape were cost and ease of adding new users/working as a team. Compared to SolidWorks, OnShape is not as mature and does not have as many features (yet). However I have never not been able to complete a project in OnShape because of this, there is almost always a work-around.

Return on Investment

CorelCAD

  • CorelCAD easily pays for itself even when not a primary product.
  • Due to its similarity to AutoCAD, it's a reasonable solution with a shortened learning curve for existing AutoCAD users.
Herm Harrison | TrustRadius Reviewer

Onshape

  • It's hard to quantify, since this is the only software we've used, but for how much it costs (somewhere in the $100-$200 per month range per person, I think), it's way more affordable for a small company than buying 10 SW or NX licenses.
