I think if you manage a large number of mailboxes, you need a reliable solution to protect corporate email from any threat. This solution uses AI to analyze emails to check if they're safe or if it's a risk for the organization. It has a good UI (all in English), and the more you're using it, the more you get. There are a lot of metrics and indicators to help the email security admin.

FireMon

The networking team needed insight into traffic for a particular application and had reached out to see if FireMon could provide insight into the traffic flow to help with troubleshooting. It simply made a traffic report that was auto emailed to the team about the issue, and it gave great insight on how often it was being used.

Pros

Darktrace

  • Monitors your network for unusual behaviour; as it learns what is normal for your network, you don't need to worry too much about things that are normal for your organisation, but might be considered odd in other places, triggering as alarms. It can also detect more subtle changes such as a device accessing a server but at an unusual time.
  • There are a large number of models that are used to create the alerts, which can all be customised, and you can also create your own from scratch, to allow you to tailor it perfectly to your situation.

FireMon

  • PCI Reporting - After identifying which firewalls and rulesets are in scope, producing a report artifact to satisfy PCI requirements on Firewall reviews is literally a two-click operation.
  • Storing Rule Metadata - FireMon stores metadata (prefilled fields, standard fields, and custom fields) for each rule in each policy which is valuable for context during firewall reviews in particular
  • API - FireMon exposes most if not all of its functionality via REST API

Cons

Darktrace

  • Really had a poor time of identifying devices and what the device's purpose was - a simple nmap scan did a better job. The problem is they expect you to fine-tune the results - which is exactly what you would expect - but day one it found over 2,000 servers (and I only have 112).
  • Really had a hard time separating network traffic into locations - I use distinct subnets for my buildings, but there was no good way to create a logical map of my traffic internally. Did not garner a sense of trust that it was seeing everything.
  • Sat through a few "analyst" reports - which showed me possible threats in my environment. I am already using a few open source tools, and they actually found more than the analyst reports. Also, there was no way to get the reports on your own - you had to work through their analysts to get the information.

FireMon

  • Some features could be added to the existing functionality which include NAT rules usage
  • Rule expiration normalization from firewalls rather than entering them in rule documentation
  • .csv exports of the files from the firewall pane only gives usage for 30 days by default and that should be increased

I would give a 10 but if for some crazy reason Firemon does not add support for Firepower (without using FMC) before renewal then we'd have a major problem but I have absolute confidence this will not be an issue

      Support Rating

      Darktrace

Darktrace support is excellent in my experience. They send a competent engineer on-site to provide on-boarding training. They were also very responsive in responding to questions and concerns. Having an individual point of contact who is a competent network and security engineer is not a common experience, at least for me.

FireMon technical support is awesome! They respond quickly to our requests and they are well trained and very knowledgeable about the tool. Some issues have to be referred to the development team, but technical support largely provides solutions for any issues that we may have.

      Alternatives Considered

      Darktrace

The Darktrace user interface was improved. Darktrace provides more metrics and more info to decide if an email is malicious or not in doubt case. Darktrace provides a lot of info about the email being analyzed, if there was a previous communication between both parts before for example, it's so easy to deploy.

I has worked with AlgoSec and while they are very similar product, I find the FireMon is easier to understand and get rolling with. While both require some learning, FireMon is by far the easier one. Once you have an understanding of how things are arranged and labeled you can easily import firewalls and begin to work on them to improve them

      FireMon

Firemon Is easily scalable and maintainable with any size team. Although it requires some tech debt, it is well worth the time to invest to ensure compliance is visible and reports are accurate. Although our environment is very large we do not fully utilize the scalability of the Firemon product.

      Return on Investment

      Darktrace

      • Darktrace is covering some lack of security issues.
      • Darktrace helps the company to follow some compliance obligations.
      • Darktrace can't solve all issues. It needs to work with other Security tools (e.g Splunk).

      FireMon

      • The use of FireMon has eliminated the backlog in firewall policy changes, approval, and implementation.
      • FireMon has greatly increased the accuracy of changes, and reduced the risk of planned changes (3 incidents in over 27000 change tickets--most with multiple policy changes in each, is a stellar record)
