Best scenario is digital advertising campaigns where there is a specific data need like purchase based targeting or account based marketing and there is room to generate new consumers. Worst scenario when you have a very specific set of consumers or objective to reach that would benefit from the additional users reached within the modeled portion of the data.

MongoDB

As a developer, the main reason for using MongoDB is its speed and its ability to add records with different fields to the same collection in a much more flexible way than a database based on a relational model. For example, a document can be used to represent a blog and the associated comments can be placed as an array in the main document. This makes data easier to manage, eliminating the "JOIN" operation that affects performance and horizontal scalability in traditional relational databases. As for less favorable scenarios, they could be those applications that need to perform frequent updates with many transactions, for example bank transactions.

MongoDB

  • Not being written in C++, we can work with a much freer schema. MongoDB is very good to combine with JavaScript, mostly because the platform can be adapted to work with this language and leave aside what would be conventional procedures, and JavaScript is better for working with duplicated data.

Cons

Oracle DaaS

  • 1:1 matching to modeled ratio. Though modeling is necessary to build scale, some clients require very specific targeting that cannot be fulfilled through a modeled audience segment.

MongoDB

  • MongoDB seems to be one of the most complete tools in its field, I believe that it has all the features that a non-relational database should have.
  • Perhaps because it is a relatively new tool there are very few experts in the field of MongoDB.

Familiarity can be a great reason to continue use of a product as it affords you speed and tight accuracy in execution. Although I would love to try PostgreSQL as I've heard a lot of great things about it, MongoDB has not given me any reason or cause for concern in the projects that we have thrown at it.

MongoDB is surprisingly easy to use. The team is able to set it up and start working with it almost immediately. There were a few gotchas along the way, mostly when setting it up for production uses, but those were mostly minor and well covered in the documentation. The tool (Compass) provided is also very intuitive and easy to work with. Learning to run queries took a bit of time, but it is mostly due to it being new and very different from how SQL works.

I have reached multiple times to the MongoDB community for the help and they have provided each and easy solution for every problem. Over the internet and on stack overflow many people responds over the challenges. Now this tool is very much used in every company and projects so internally many people are there to give a support.

While the setup and configuration of MongoDB is pretty straight forward, having a vendor that performs automatic backups and scales the cluster automatically is very convenient. If you do not have a system administrator or DBA familiar with MongoDB on hand, it's a very good idea to use a 3rd party vendor that specializes in MongoDB hosting. The value is very well worth it over hosting it yourself since the cost is often reasonable among providers.

I only briefly looked at CouchDB after I already began using MongoDB. Naturally, I have used many relational SQL databases.Since MongoDB did everything I needed, I saw no need to look around for alternatives.(Okay, full disclosure. I am an "association" vs "inheritance" object-oriented snob. In Rails, ActiveRecord implements persistence via inheritance for SQL databases. The MongoDB gems like mongoid and mongomapper add persistance via association. Boom!)

Return on Investment

Oracle DaaS

  • Neutral impact measured due to lack of online to offline measurement

MongoDB

  • Open Source w/ reasonable support costs have a direct, positive impact on the ROI (we moved away from large, monolithic, locked in licensing models)
  • You do have to balance the necessary level of HA & DR with the number of servers required to scale up and scale out. Servers cost money - so DR & HR doesn't come for free (even though it's built into the architecture of MongoDB
