dbForge SQL Complete is well suited for professionals that have to write code all day. In my role in the business intelligence department we are writing SQL pretty much all day. Having a tool that helps us do that faster, in a cleaner way is pretty awesome and something that pays for itself quickly.

It is good software when we have to connect the database of the remote server but it is not as good as phpMyAdmin. When local server is concerned, phpMyAdmin is way better because it has more cleaner UI than Workbench. Workbench is preferred only because phpMyAdmin does not support the connection of remote servers.

I asked questions about a warm standby and multicast replication. We ended up using bi-directional replication and a warm standby db. Having 3 or more live OLTP DB's where each was read-write was going to be difficult to manage for contention if the same table was being updated. We stuck with an easier solution to have only two OLTP's, and then used additional DB's as read-only DW's.

Pros
Devart
  • SQL complete allows you to create custom snippets that allow you to store frequently ran queries in shortcuts. The code can be populated within seconds!
  • Another great benefit is custom aliases. If you frequently reference the same tables over and over again it gets tiresome to retype the aliases. Storing these can make your code more consistent and save time.
  • SQL complete will also highlight the metadata within your database. For example, if you start typing an insert statement you populate code for all the field names by pressing the tab. This is a real-time saver for wide tables!

  • Sometimes it can be slow to retrieve the database metadata.
  • Updating the software with the activation/deactivation of licenses could be further streamlined.

  • There are a lot of menus, some of them aren't needed or users who only need to send queries. I had to watch a videos on youtube to learn how to use workbench. It would be great to have some videos inside software (or links to videos on youtube)

MySQL Workbench is useful for specifically remote databases. Remote databases generally does not have any UI and we have to connect the server via SSH and on CLI, we write the queries and it shows the data, which is quite tiering and more prone to make mistakes whereas MySQL Workbench provides cleaner way to connect and provides lot of tools, so that we do not have to write queries all the time.

It's like comparing a VW to an performance car like a Ferrari. If you need the performance, bells and whistles you'll want PhpStorm. If you just need to get from one place to another, MySQL Workbench will do just fine.
