Considered Both Products
DraftSight
Chose DraftSight
DraftSight is much easier to use, as I really didn't get along with SketchUp. As it is so similar to cad, I am able to find solutions and then discuss [them] with my design department. This makes the production process much smoother and easier, and we can show the production …
Chose DraftSight
Being a user for almost 10 years of DraftSight, the ease of use, the distribution of functions, etc. make switching to another program a bit painful and in need of a learning period.
Chose DraftSight
I personally enjoyed AutoCAD more as that is what I used throughout my education. However, it is much more expensive for nearly the same product as Draft Sight. Revit is its own type of software and isn't easily comparable to something like DraftSight. Draftsight was just …

Chose DraftSight
The cost/benefit between DraftSight and AutoCAD is why I decided to use DraftSight.
Chose DraftSight
Each of these has their pros and cons but DraftSight is the most complete and capable package for accurate 2D designs at a low price point. It does 99.999% of what we need it to and is easily affordable.
Chose DraftSight
DraftSight has a significantly lower cost for having very similar features and functions.
Chose DraftSight
I have used AutoCAD extensively and tested trail or free versions of FreeCAD, LibreCAD and likely a number of other 2D CAD programs in the past. In a business setting where compatibility and reliability was essential, only DraftSight gave me the features and confidence I need …
Chose DraftSight
I only briefly explored NanoCAD and it seemed very similar to DraftSight in capability and features from what I could tell.
Chose DraftSight
I did not use it enough to actually comment. I used the free version, however, the interface was confusing (due to my lack of experience) so I threw in the towel early.
Chose DraftSight
This is the best alternative to AutoCAD we have found.
Chose DraftSight
DraftSight has all the tools and is effective as the others. We use it as the cost means we can afford an up to date system.
Chose DraftSight
Not in the same league. AutoCAD seems to just work. Draftsight doesnt.
Chose DraftSight
Draftsight is NOT my basic drafting program. It lacks the power tools that PowerCadd has. Vectorworks Architect is a complete BIM solution. Draft sight does not offer an object-based solution, so would not work for my basic CAD needs. Users considering Draftsight should use …

Highlights

TrustRadius
Research Team Insight
Published

SketchUp and DraftSight are both popular Computer Aided Design (CAD) programs on SketchUP has over 100 ratings and 35 reviews whereas DraftSight has over 300 ratings and 100 reviews. Compared to most SaaS platforms, CAD software has been around for several decades. And while CAD software is most commonly used for engineering and architectural purposes, it has a growing variety of applications.

Like DraftSight, SketchUp is also a CAD-first program, unlike a few other products in the category that function as secondary simulation software or visualization tools. On TrustRadius, most SketchUp users are from smaller businesses or architecture firms. While DraftSight also primarily serves small businesses on TrustRadius, more of its reviewers are from engineering companies.

Features

SketchUp’s feature set can differ depending on which version you choose: SketchUp Free, SketchUp Shop, Sketchup Pro, SketUp Studio, SketchUp for Web, Enterprise, and SketchUp Studio for Education. There are even more industry and use-case specific versions available as well. SketchUp’s major selling point seems to be customization to users’ needs. For B2B software purposes, Sketchup Pro, SketchUp Studio, and Enterprise seem to provide the most business-ready offering.  They all focus on 3D modeling and exporting projects in HD for facilitating easy collaboration.

Draftsight has 5 different tiers of pricing: Standard, Professional, Premium, Enterprise Plus. The key difference between the different tiers is whether or not they support 3D design. While Standard and Professional do not, Premium, Enterprise, and Enterprise Plus do.

Standard is best for non-professional use cases, whereas the other three tiers. The more advanced tiers feature APIs for integrating your ERP, PDM, and LISP tools. as well as complete tools for drafting, modeling, prototyping, manufacturing, laser cutting, and 3D printing. The Enterprise offers are best for organizations with many users across multiple sites.

Limitations

SketchUp is considered one of the easiest CAD programs to jump into, however, it is not without some criticisms from users. Interestingly, while it is said to be easy-to-use, it’s actual functionality is difficult. SketchUp can be seen as clunky or lack the finesse of other CAD software. For more advanced projects, SketchUp may not be the best fit.

With DraftSight, reviewers mention that it is not as customizable as they would like, and that often updates will add new features that make using the tool more difficult to use. When reviewers have ran into issues, they report that customer service with DraftSight leaves much to be desired and that online support is not useful for troubleshooting.

Pricing

SketchUp is gaining popularity with CAD users because it has a web-based version available completely for free. Its next non-student offering starts at $119/yr. Its next plan most suitable for businesses that will be using SketchUp as a team starts at $299/yr. Students still enrolled in institutions of higher education can gain access to SketchUp for as little as $55/yr. Teams requiring more than 10 licenses may benefit from special pricing, but sales must be contacted to get more information.

DraftSight is marketed as being a cheaper alternative to SketchUp. Its cheapest tier (Standard) starts at $99/year per user. Professional is $199/yr, Premium $499/yr, and Enterprise or Enterprise Plus tiers have customized pricing depending on the size your business and number of users. Expect to pay more than $500/yr at this tier.

We put it through its paces with our drawings and it works fine. We do a lot of wiring diagrams and industrial control panel layout drawings, so we use a lot of its 2D capabilities. I would not use it in a multi-user environment where you have multiple designers working on one project at a time. This software makes no provisions for allowing multiple users to work at the same time on the same drawing and has no native version control. And because of their poor software control, DraftSight many times put out versions that are "crashy", which would make a lot of people very unproductive very quickly. I would look at other products for larger projects like that.

Real estate is not really the most likely use for Sketchup, since it has so many choices and possibilities. But, it is an innovative way to differentiate yourself from the competition. The program is very well-suited to the myopic seller or buyer who can't visualize future changes and their effect on value.

Pros
Dassault Systemes
  • You can easily bring in a dwg format drawing into the programme and it will display the information just as well as AutoCAD.
  • The programme supports shortcut features or one-click buttons for the most commonly used operations.
  • Script files can be used which is a bonus.

  • Quickly exploring solutions in 3D: We get a lot of "what if" and "what would that look like" questions. While hand-sketching and hand-drafting can be fairly quick, SketchUp allows me to quickly create 3D and 2D views of a detail or solution, change dimensions and materials in a flash, and show a client or installer the plan in minutes.
  • Creating professional design documents in LayOut: Projects of any scale need good documentation. Using a combination of SketchUp and LayOut, I can create a Design Intent Set, plans for permitting, a set for mechanical trades to mark-up, etc. Having clear, appropriately-scaled drawings with dimensions or notations is a must, and we don't always have the time or budget to get an architect involved!
  • Using live files to guide discussions: Not all clients are "visual" people, so opening their model and orbiting around their space in real time has been extremely helpful. Clients and trades enjoy the perspective views so much that we often include them in the full-sized drawing sets to give a good "overall" view of the project intent. For complex or tight spaces, sometimes un-rendered plans and elevations just aren't enough!

Cons
Dassault Systemes
  • Draftsight could run better on lower performace machines, even on high performance machines there can be some lag now and again.
  • There used to be a more basic subscription version which was perfect for our needs, now lowest subscription is more expensive. Bringing back the standard version would be great.
  • Including hash pattern files would be very useful.

  • Ability to import Revit files and libraries.
  • Ability to export true curved vector linework. There are some workarounds, needs to be refined.
  • Create an OPEN MAPS connection. Since the split from Google, the source for high-quality aerials is limited.
  • Ability to dock all menus to the master window on a Mac
  • Ability to develop dockable menu trays on a Mac

We typically wait a few years in between renewing, as even older versions are powerful tools for modeling, and we make sure the amount of feature changes are worth the re-investment.

Easy if you know how to use CAD software. But is not very difficult to learn using DraftSight if this is your first CAD software. As soon as you get in to it the work flow will save you a lot of time and its simple interface is very nice.

Technical support seems to be overseas with broken English and difficulty to read English. I asked for a trial license to try the fix but it was declined. Ask pratiksha.dahotre and gayatri.keskar for details. In summary, they released a broken version, I helped to fix by providing feedback and error logs. They claimed it is fixed but I can't test it.

Sketchup is so intuitive; I can't recall ever looking for official support. However, there are many user forums online that can answer more questions. The usefulness of the online forums is, however, tempered by the fact that there have been many versions of the software under different ownership and support regimes, and thus finding the right information for the right version of the software can be a challenge.

Take time to get used to where commands are and how the interface can be customized to suit your needs and work style. The keyboard commands are very helpful and can make work more efficient if time is taken to learn them.

While SketchUp is free, DraftSights cost is minimal and its abilities are much greater. It is so much easier to layout and modifies a system design. Since DraftSight is compatible with all versions of CAD, it makes it easy to collaborate with customers on their specific system design. We spend less time and see greater sales on our projects.

It's great to give the customer an overview of how a project will look, but it will never replace the information that a blueprint or engineering drawing can convey. SketchUp is great for the casual user or someone who is just getting started in design work. Other high powered software, such as Solidworks or Inventor is more suited for 3D modeling on a regular basis

  • I have been able to save countless hours by making drawing corrections myself. Previously, I would have had to wait hours or days to get drawings back from our customers.
  • In the past year I would say that DraftSight has saved roughly 200 hours. That time would have been spent waiting for our customers to make corrections and then send them back to us.

  • SketchUp has definitely had a positive impact on the customer experience with our company. The model can be generated to give the owner a good idea of the final product before actually committing the resources to complete the project.
  • Having simple models created before the work gets started in the field means that issues with elevations or odd angles can be ironed out beforehand and solved with the design team. This has greatly reduced the rework on our more complex self-perform concrete structures!
