FastSpring

FastSpring will be well suited for a company that needs simple checkout solution. As a bonus, you'll get a nice checkout flow. If you're a company that doesn't have the time to concentrate and becomes an expert in data security, currency conversion, global tax management, or fraud detection – this will be a great fit. It's appropriate for anyone who doesn't want to waste time on managing support for their e-commerce business.

Paddle

We feel that Paddle is well suited in any software offering that requires an in-app purchase flow or a custom built subscription model. It's ease of set up and low overhead make it particularly attractive to small and medium businesses and software vendors that manage multiple products with a similar purchase pipeline. In very large platform scenarios, a fully custom solution might provide more flexibility since direct integration with the underlying payment processor can be built in-house. With this of course comes the cost of initial engineering and maintenance.

Cons

FastSpring

  • One issue I have had is when a customer enters his or her email address incorrectly, and consequently does not receive the downloadable files for the book her or she ordered. It would be helpful if FastSpring revised the ordering system to require that the email address be entered twice, or somehow verified, so this issue does not arise in the future.
  • Some of the options offered by FastSpring can be tricky to set up, such as setting up a system whereby a customer can order multiple file downloads. It would be helpful if FastSpring could provide "wizards" for setting up ordering pages, rather than just having users choose from options that are not completely user-friendly.

Paddle

  • More detailed dashboard
  • Invoicing feature for accepting direct payments
  • It's better if they can offer lower transaction rates

Alternatives Considered

FastSpring

Our previous e-Commerce platform (which we refuse to name them to give them even the smallest amount of publicity) charged a hefty cuts of sales and a service fee on top of that. 90% of our revenue (we are a small business) went right back into paying the service fees. Additionally, customer service was horrendous. We were even insulted by a customer service representative of theirs as they made a rude remark when we criticized their service fees. They said we wouldn't have an issue if we weren't "too poor" to afford them.
FastSpring on the other hand has very low (for the services they render) fees that are taken out at POS, so nothing comes out of our pocket. And their award-winning customer service is, as expected, amazing!

Paddle

Paddle has better customer experience than other offerings in its class. Provides a low overhead and quick setup solution when compared to direct Stripe integration. It is competitive on rates with other offerings and when features like frontline support, abandoned cart recovery, and user suggestions are factored into their offering, their rates are more than competitive.

Return on Investment

FastSpring

  • Well – their services are not free. Negative is that they take a commission which of course we could always look forward to lowering.
  • FastSpring's new checkout solution improved our conversion rate by 15%.
  • FastSpring provides a good view of how your business is growing in terms of revenue. You can see the refunds made this month, type of currencies performing the best, countries and more.

Paddle

  • Paddle takes only 5% of sales, in comparison to 30% as Apple does.
  • We added browser extension in-app purchases thanks to Paddle, which now generate our revenue.
