Qualysguard gave us the tools we needed that were benificial to our job without us having to do too much manual interaction such as with NMap, Metasploit , etc. It was a very efficient platform that I would go to again.

One scenario that fits well Hydra's ability is to test the strength of Drupal usernames and passwords. So, as an example, if we have a Drupal site at some HTTP web address, we could use lots of methods in order to collect a list with some valid users. After we create the list and also the list of some possible passwords we can try to initiate a Hydra brute force attack. Hydra for example is not suited for finding the vulnerabilities of a host, for this other solutions can be used.

This website is well suited for organisations that perform regular security assessments. In particular, external scans and reconnaissance. As an example, I am able to run a report on our Wordpress website to enable me to see whether we are missing any important security updates. We found it to be very useful for training new security analysts, due to the straightforward GUI. You can work on the same projects together to help you to do this. Having it laid out in front of them helps them to understand the concepts much easier than using dozens of different tools to achieve the same goals, and also speeds up training. If you're a personal user it may not be appropriate due to price. If you are a personal user, I would advise using the many open source tools there are that do the same things. The strength of this platform is that it combines them into a single pane of glass, but you can achieve the same things with other tools if necessary. For example, there are many other tools that you could use to run a UDP port scan that do not cost money (EG NMAP)

It is well suited for environments that are looking for a solution that is top notch for vulnerability scanning, and is the most accurate at doing so. It would also fit environments that have a lot of endpoints to scan or like to have scanning done on an automatic basis. It is less appropriate in environments that want to use a platform right away, without getting training in how to use it, or reading documentation on the product.

Pros
  • One of most important thing is that Hydra's ability to perform HTTP post form attacks.
  • The tool also can be used to attack a great number of protocols.
  • The source code of the tool/software is also available for others (so it is not a closed source one).
  • A good thing about this tool is also the support available and it also has a high ranking on GitHub (over 1000 stars).

  • Good support
  • Cloud based
  • Integrates well with identity providers

  • Attestation is so easy with Qualys. I find this one feature makes the investment worth the cost
  • Ease of use. Within an hour of first installing, a person can be running compliance tests without a hitch.
  • Great training materials and support. I have never had to take more than twenty minutes to solve a problem either through support or the forums.

Cons
  • It is not a straightforward tool to use, it needs certain dependencies to be installed so it can function as intended by its creators. This is one of the most important steps that need to be done while configuring the tool as one needs.
  • Sometimes the tool gives False Positives passwords.
  • There are some issues in the functionality of the tool itself (like some bugs, for example affecting the running and hanging process after a number of tries), but most of them have a solution and there is big community support for the tool.

  • No logging for things like scanning. This means you don't actually know when the scan has failed if you're not immediately on the ball.
  • Reports could look better. It would be good to be able to customise the report with some different styles to suit your company's branding.
  • Could have better tutorials.
  • It may be useful to have a feature similar to Microsoft Secure Score, which compares your organisation to similar ones, so that you have a reference of how secure your environment actually is.

  • Notices some findings which were not clear why they appear(suspected false positive).
  • Working with Qualys support(for example due to the previous point) wasn't the best experience. the response was very slow.
  • Qualys limit the daily API requests. In case you need more, it will cost.

Again, the usability of Qualys has been a pinpoint for this entire review. It was easily the worst thing about the product and because of this, I would not recommend Qualys to anybody in my field. This should be something that Qualys strives to improve if they wish to stay in business.

They had a support page within the WAS to report any concerns or seek help. But the UI of that is not smooth. Regardless support staff were pretty responsive and helpful. They scheduled calls to understand and address our problems. Email support is good as well.

There are many other tools similar to Hydra, one of them being "John the Ripper ". Notable differences are that while John the Ripper works offline, Hydra works online; also Hydra is more popular and with a wider usage as it supports Windows, Linux, and macOSX. An important thing is that both software are free to use, making both very useful tools. We can note that JTR has also a "pro" version that is not free to use and it is more optimized for speed and performance and focused on a specific operating system, while Hydra is free and offers all features at no cost.

Offers a great number of tools in one interface, giving you a single pane of glass to work from. Therefore, it's favourable compared to some of these other products, that do similar things but are less intuitive and less easy to use. This makes it not only easier to use, but easier to report results to your customers. Also, although the price point can seem high, once you start adding multiple paid tools that do the same job, there probably isn't a massive amount of difference (if any)

We find that Nessus is a great product, on par if not slightly better compared to Qualys in terms of their pricing model. However, Qualys Cloud Platform has better quality reporting, and offers great tips and suggestions on quickly closing a gap and eliminating the risk. In our organization, both products are great and meet our expectations, but due to pricing, we favor Nessus slightly more.

  • Our business objectives are accomplished using the tool as Hydra covers our needs for a free password cracking tool.
  • The tool is a free one that has a lot of advantages because it is a powerful one to use for the specific task of performing some activities that are related to penetration testing.
  • The services that our business provides for several clients in the field of penetration testing are at the level our customers are expecting.

  • The most important thing that happens with this program is to automate one hundred percent the security of my system since this program is in charge of supervising each of the applications and websites in detail.
  • One of the purposes for which we trust Qualys Cloud Platform is to keep our system clean and secure; the ability of this software to manage our vulnerability makes us more cautious about working with it.
