.NET

One of our business requirements was to have field workers use their tablets to gather information. They may or may not be connected to the internet. Our .NET application allowed us to create this application and retain the data locally until they got back to the office to upload the data to a central server. The tablets were Android- and iOS-based so writing an application one time with .NET Core helped us out immensely.

SAP BPM

It is well suited when we need to integrate business processes with SAP ERP and SAP CRM - the solution can be integrated with business rules/procedures defined in SAP ERP/CRM and NetWeaver can be used to monitor the rules and flag off exceptions. When there are multiple workflows running, it tends to slow down running of these processes. Also, it entirely depends on SAP portal for it to run efficiently.

Pros

.NET

  • Asp.NET features like early binding, JIT compilation, caching services and native optimization supports gives your application the high level of performance.
  • All the Asp.NET applications are highly monitored and managed to help application available to handle requests.
  • The best part of .NET Framework is it has its own built-in caching features.
  • The content and the program logic are separated in the .NET Framework, thus reducing the program inconveniences.
  • Offers great security with the built-in Windows authentication and per-application configuration.

SAP BPM

  • Virtual paper trail. Iterations of process and current documentation are all stored as "artifacts", leaving a great trail.
  • Configuration of users. BPM somewhat magically determines which users will be impacted and automates rules.
  • A pro (that is also a con) is the design interface. If you know what you are doing, it is incredibly powerful and malleable.

Cons

.NET

  • Interacting with some of the core functionalities of the computer requires the user to know C++ and program using unmanaged code. However, I don't think this is a limitation that only applies to .NET.
  • .NET has a very powerful feature to allow generic access to objects, known as Language-Integrated Query or LINQ. Knowing how to use this feature is not required to create applications, but makes development much easier. Since it is not required, there is very little motivation to learn how to implement LINQ. It might be beneficial to promote this feature more heavily.
  • It is difficult to find a third area that could be improved with .NET.

.NET frameworks are fantastic overall. There are no limitations to what you can accomplish with it. The most important part is that you'll have access to developer community support and that .NET is always being improved every month. Be it in web applications, back-end servers, or integrations, .NET enables developers to do it all.

Minimal support is required from the product team, as Microsoft .NET has a great community platform where users can post their problems and also get the solutions to those problems. It is very rare that a solution can not be found. That is when it becomes necessary to get in touch with the Support Team and, in those cases, the solution is provided.

We have our own tech support for systems, I would say they probably could use more training on it, I don't really think it's anything regarding the SAP system, but more the knowledge they have on the system itself. It seems to take longer for them to fix any issues we may come across.

Alternatives Considered

.NET

.Net platform is our primary option for developing newer solutions because of a lot of reasons, but in the past years, we have received a few requests in which we had to use Java SE. We had no big problem to use Java. Still, the productivity difference and the offer of documentation and skilled employes was the key decision to maintain our focus using .Net.

I found the initial setup of NetWeaver is much simpler than other products especially in an SAP environment where we have SAP ERP/HRM/CRM as it can be well integrated with other SAP products. The only drawback is the need/dependency on SAP Portal. It is better suited in an environment where SAP ERP is running.

Return on Investment

.NET

  • Microsoft .NET has allowed us to utilize and leverage an existing technology without having any extra dollar spend
  • Microsoft .NET is very popular and makes it much easier to find quality developers who can build Microsoft .NET applications
  • Microsoft .NET allows you to integrate everything form older systems to newer systems
Kyle Kochtan | TrustRadius Reviewer

SAP BPM

  • Helped us harness integrated benefit from having SAP ERP/CRM by leveraging NetWeaver to define business processes/rules and monitor exceptions
  • Did not have any negative experience except for the fact that at times when multiple rules run, it can be somewhat slow
