Oracle
We have used oracle cloud-based solutions for 8 years and it has been very good. We had a cyber-attack recently and our files were protected. We are lucky to have security but we need to switch more applications to oracle. We are hoping as we integrate more fictions that they all work together seamlessly.

Scality
The team in charge of implementing Scality has to be full stack in order to guarantee the correct functioning of the entire system. However, you have to think very carefully about the balance between servers and disks, perhaps adopting smaller fully populated servers instead of large semi-populated servers, which would mean that over time our disk updates will not have a fully useful life.

Pros
Oracle
  • Block Volume provides durability and stability to data. IOPS can be changed on the fly. Always stay true to the promised performance.
  • Block Volume can be encrypted with ease to meet compliance. Can also be easily integrated with OCI vault service for extra security.
  • Object Storage and File Storage are other forms of storage that are secure and extremely easy to configure. FSS is one of the best in the industry when it comes to reliability and performance.
  • SSD block volumes are persistent in OCI unlike many other clouds.

  • I love the redundancy of the software.

Cons
Oracle
  • Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Container Engine for Kubernetes (OKE) is a fully managed service that makes it a little hard sometimes to fine tune HPC workloads, for example AI/Deep learning training where a lot of data transfer and compute is needed.
  • The initial setup can certainly be improved with less steps to make it faster and easier to deploy compared to the competition, for example Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE).
  • Documentation and best practice documentation for OKE can be improved especially since there are not a lot of customer references available for large scale deployments that need fine tuned performance.

  • The overall packaging is not very good. I think it could be more efficient for installation.
  • There are many components in storage servers. This can generally be complex to understand, you have to be patient.

Usability
Oracle
The services & products in Oracle Cloud Infrastructure needs more improvement to beat other Cloud service providers. The price is good & Security processes are good. We are requiring to put more effort in supporting this Oracle Cloud Infrastructure than other Cloud service providers. Probably better ways are there but is not super easy to find or not super available

As an organization, it took us a while to understand the shift from a traditional black box SAN to software-defined storage, but now we are much more certain of what this means. The time invested and the resources were not very high, thanks on the one hand to the technical support and on the other to the coherence and good development of the platform.

Support Rating
Oracle
Support has always been great, especially during production cutover. They are always responsive whenever we need them. However, to get this level of support, you have to raise it at level 1 priority since for level 2, they become a little less engaging. But overall, support is good since they know how to deal with problems.

Alternatives Considered
Oracle
Oracle Cloud Infrastructure has the most required cloud capabilities, which enable [the] possibility of multiple things like data analytics, network monitoring, and easy for the user to easily transfer many different data on the cloud very securely. Oracle Cloud Infrastructure has great activity tracking functions which are easily manipulated by any user.

Scality
Due to the nature of our business we require extensive encryption and availability for sensitive customer data. The erasure encoding that Scality provides gives us the assurance that documents are rest are never in a state of being downloaded or available to a casual data thief. This is something that can be found with other vendors but at a fraction of the same cost. Having this kind of performance, availability and redundancy at the cost that Scality provides has made a large difference to our organization.

Contract Terms and Pricing Model
Oracle
was not part of initial purchase team. Anyways, i think unit pricing and billing frequency is good compared to other Cloud service providers, when it comes to Cloud Capital expenditure & Operational expenditure. Would be more interested in exploring more options where customers can get more cost relaxations on trying out new cloud services in Oracle Cloud Infrastructure for example a new App or a feature

Professional Services
Oracle
Services & Infra wise is ok to use & host applications & services. Security wise also good for a Cloud service provider. It is a interesting area to explore & using it for day to day needs can be further improvised in future probably. Modern day Services like AI and Machine learning could be improved

Return on Investment
Oracle
  • We have been able to test at low scale complex solutions using OCI
  • The Free Tier option can be used to test easy of configuration and deployment
  • Since pricing is in U.S. Dollars, it can be a problem in countries with less stable currencies

  • Keeping sensitive customer data secure is a must for our organization and Scality has great features to make this happen.
  • We replaced a single SAN with a Scality ring and found performance to improve as we store more and more customer data.
  • Being able to lose various portions of our Scality ring and allow it to continue to service customers while maintaining high performance has been key to our business.
