Oracle GoldenGate

It is particularly useful in situations where ACTIVE DATA GUARD cannot handle the desired outcome. It can be used to support cross-platform migrations not supported by Active Data Guard which is a far cheaper solution to DR. It is suited for migrations that require zero downtime as there is bi-directional capability built into the product. It is also useful when the source and target are of different databases such as Oracle to SQL Server as the target. It is overkill if all you require is a physical standby that is open read-only.

QlikView

I can't recommend QlikView enough for a small shop on a shoestring budget--with one technical user administering things, all your users can have a really nice, super useful data exploration tool. The burden is certainly on that one user, but the payback is immense considering the price (free!). Solutions like Tableau and Qlik's new product, Qlik Sense, are certainly prettier and less demanding in terms of UI design, but they can't touch QlikView in terms of value.

QlikView

  • QlikView allows you make data-backed visualization very easily. The format of these visualizations is completely up to you and your team.
  • QlikView can show your data in many type of graphs as well as show the actual numbers associated with graphical points.
  • We use QlikView to access data on Microsoft SQL Server, but other data sources are supported. Check out the QlikView documentation to determine if they can use data in formats that you need to perform analysis on.

Cons

Oracle GoldenGate

  • Setting Up Oracle GoldenGate as HA in an Oracle RAC environment. While this is possible to do and there is documentation out there, I've found that specific Oracle GoldenGate and Oracle RAC experience is needed in order to make this happen. That level of experience does not exist everywhere.
  • Monitoring Oracle GoldenGate. Currently there are two main options for monitoring Oracle GoldenGate, the first, GoldenGate Monitor, does not scale well as it becomes very non-performant when you have more than 10-15 GoldenGate Managers reporting to it, the second, Oracle Enterprise Manager, while getting better still requires a lot of manual configuration to have Oracle GoldenGate talk to the OEM agent. While this has got a lot better with 12c GoldenGate, I still feel that there is room to improve here.
  • Unable to replicate certain Data Types. Again, less of an issue in 12c Oracle GoldenGate, but there are still some Data Types that Oracle GoldenGate is unable to replicate.
Michael Grayson | TrustRadius Reviewer

QlikView

  • Qlikview has its own database and management system. Developers are required to build a new data model to get data into Qlikview.
  • Qlikview's web application requires significant memory and processing power from the browser. Complex dashboards can crash your browser if you're running too many things at once.
  • Qlikview dashboards look relatively outdated.

Ease of use, ability to load from pretty much any data source. today I created an application that loaded time sheets from excel that are not in a table format. With Qlik's "enable transformation steps" I was able to automate loads of multiple spreadsheets and multiple tabs easily. Could not do that with any other tool.

Once set up, it's very easy to use and keep running, it's getting to that point that can make it cumbersome to some. Also, depending on the data that you want to replicate, the configuration files can become quite cumbersome to maintain. Learning curve can be high for some who are not as experienced with databases and transactions.

Dashboards are easy to use. They are very Excel-like with HTML5 capabilities. Data visualization is good.

The system requires minimum training to get user up and running. It just takes one hour to get up and running with building basic dashboards and one all day session for sophisticated dashboard building. It is intuitive.

We see this in our user adoption. We went from 6 users/day consuming dashboards to over 200 in 1.5 years.

We have 40-50 power users authoring dashboards. They have development licenses. My team in IT used to have to build all dashboards. Our capacity has grown from 3 to 50. Most of these users are analyst types good in Excel. A few power users can write SQL to build QVD models

Oracle Support for Oracle GoldenGate has been quite responsive and quite helpful in the few situations where we've needed it. Furthermore, the documentation on Oracle GoldenGate is so good that we often do not need to contact support with issues as the fix is already documented and able to be run by us without needing to open a ticket.

We've had Oracle consultants come as well for training days to talk about new features, parts of Oracle GoldenGate we may not be using and things of that nature. The consultants they send are great as they're very knowledgeable about all things Oracle GoldenGate and great resources for any questions or concerns you may have with the product.

If Oracle GoldenGate is new to your organization, expose as many DBAs as possible to it. Having your whole team fluent in it will overcome early operational hurdles and allow it to more quickly become an accepted and supported part of your supported platform for your team that will enable the business to use it to its fullest.

"Implementation" can mean a few things... so I'm not sure that this is the answer you want.... but here it goes:To me, implementation means: "Is the user interface intuitive and can I produce meaningful reports with ease?"On that score, I'd say YES. The amount of training required was minimal and the results were powerful. The desktop implementation is a simple, "blank" interface just waiting for your creativity. The pre-populated templates give you a reasonable start to any project -- and a good set of objects to "play around with" if you're just getting started. Finally, note that the "implementation" I used was baked into QuickBooks 2016 Enterprise -- called "Advanced Reporting"..... That integration makes it ultra useful and simple.

It wasn't easy to set up replication to a message queue using SharePlex. We had challenges using the product when the application was doing a lot of "rollbacks to savepoint". SharePlex always showed a lag. When I was testing SharePlex, there was no way to offload the workload from the DB server while using it.

We evaluated a lot of other products in the magic quadrant but primarily compared QV against Tableau. We initially wanted to go with Tableau because it was cheaper and a simpler product to learn and use but frankly, their sales person was horrible and was not willing to work with us on number of licences or price. Qlikview was a great alternative. The product was better and even though it was a little more expensive, the more flexible licensing arrangement made up for it

Have never had any issues with scaling Oracle GoldenGate itself, however Oracle GoldenGate Monitor does have scaling issues, but with Oracle GoldenGate now able to be monitored by Oracle Enterprise Manager, this is no longer an issue, in my opinion.

Return on Investment

Oracle GoldenGate

  • As Oracle GoldenGate integrated well with the Oracle products we were already using, we didn't need to spend additional time and money to purchase or develop an integration solution.
  • XStream and Active Data Guard licenses come free with Oracle GoldenGate, reducing overhead costs.
  • Eliminated the need to scale our workstations up in terms of hardware resources. Creating read-replicas to offload read requests gave more opportunities to scale horizontally.

QlikView

  • Generate quick reports for requirements that don't require complex calculations. ROI was fine, but Tableau software was much more intuitive for non-technical users on our team
  • When putting Qlikview reports side by side with Tableau, we ended up delivering Tableau reports since they were quicker to generate and required no technical expertise
