Plone

Plone is very well suited for medium and large websites with a lot of authenticated users. That said I mainly use Plone for very small companies with only one user. The templating engine makes it possible to connect virtually any design to a Plone-site, making it also very suitable for the more creative designs. Building a webshop in Plone is not advisable.

Pros

Plone

  • Rock-solid technology stack. The python/Zope/Plone stack is as solid as anything else out there.
  • Highly customizable TTW, if needed, via the Zope Management Interface, or Diazo XSL-transform theme design.
  • Good support from core developers, lots of solid add-ons which address just about any needs.
  • Amazingly customizable workflow, permissions and security management.

Cons

Plone

  • Plone has a steep learning curve if you want to manage all its aspects. Some things can be done easily, but others require great skills.
  • The Plone templating system is very specific and requires to be fully understood if you need to customize it deeply.

Plone has been used for more than ten years and it already has an interesting roadmap for its future. I do not know any other open source CMS with the same story of continuous evolution and security track. Interesting new features are added at each release and new modules are created continuously

Performance

Plone is very intensive in its operations, and if not configured well it can be slow. However it is designed and built with speed in mind and with proper use of coding, templates and caching can perform extremely well under high loads. It is capable of scaling to very high load availability environments with no specific coding requirements.

Alternatives Considered

Plone

Plone is really almost the only truly enterprise opensource CMS. Most of its opensource competitors cant compete in this area, while they may have some nice editing tools, and some cool features, Plone stands our for its security, scalability, version control, highly configurable workflows and permissions.Plone is a highly functional CMS out of the box, but it is also a platform that can be extended in many ways. We often develop custom content types to meet our clients needs. We regularly plug in external authentication systems (some of which are odd proprietary systems). And we often develop complex permissions and workflows. We simply could not achieve these solutions with many of Plone's competitors.

Return on Investment

Plone

  • Plone let us create and manage employee profiles with ease. Once someone left the department we could easily remove their profile and create a new one with their replacement
  • News items were a great addition and secretaries could easily update news items and organizational web pages with updates from their department heads.
  • With its tiered management IT spent far less time doing small updates which staff could easily do. Focused more on the overall design and function of the site.
  • Only negative is when we do a total re-design of the site it will cost a decent amount of money to upgrade, design and code new elements for the next phase.
