SolarWinds Engineer's Toolset vs. SolarWinds Database Performance Monitor

I have found the toolset especially useful for scanning subnets to discover devices, and for setting up temporary real-time monitors when we are troubleshooting or setting up new connections. The most useful aspect has been the ability to apply the tools to help troubleshoot and pinpoint intermittent issues. More general tools like Orion often do not have the granularity to detect issues like intermittent packet loss which are especially impactful to applications like Voice. The toolset gives us another level of capability to dig into issues.

Computing resources consumed by the DB instance, DPA queries & wait time, deadlock conditions, virtual infrastructure resources. The addition of NPM & DPA integration as well as cross-correlation in the identification of issues with the network or server or DB is all stupid-proof. Monitoring is more than just health and resource consumption, it's also performance. DB performance analysis is key to maintaining healthy DB instances.

• Simple to use and very easy to learn.
• The execution engines run in parallel, can execute any syntax or query.
• DPN can run all queries for both Oracle and SQL with no additional support.

• The unifying component that is intended to be the initial interface to the tools seems clunky. I prefer to start the tools individually rather than using it.
• The port scanner could use some improvements to make it easier to use.

Very easy to use and intuitive. Just be careful with the WAN Killer...it does what it says.

I would say it is a very good tool from overall perspective compared to what I have used till now, still I will give it like 9 just for the sake of the interface and the integration which they should be doing soon with the main module which is SAM , NPM etc.

I haven't compared any tools similar to SolarWinds Engineer's Toolset. This might be because I'm pretty biased when it comes to monitoring, and reporting solutions. I've found that SolarWinds provides the biggest bang for the buck in my opinion. I'm sure there are other solutions on the market that compete, but I haven't tried any of them because I've been very satisfied with SolarWinds.

SolarWinds DPA gives you a very deep analysis and monitoring of the devices which these tools will not give you neither Datadog or ManageEngine. It even gives you job rate , db locks and all other parameters to monitor which we usually do manually by going in to the DB and not from the tools. It also creates a dashboard out of the same.

• What is the cost of a downed DB instance? That's your ROI. DPM lets you see issues before they become critical.
