An appliance rich in features and protection for the network.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Our nextgen Barracuda CloudGen Firewall F380 has been a key part of the company's protection and security. It was acquired about 2 years ago from a reseller and since then it has been our network edge defense. The appliance is complete and in addition to a firewall, it has other advanced protection features such as URL filtering, application control, VPN and anti-malware. We use a topology with 2 appliances in active-standby, the first one is the main one and the second one is for redundancy. With our scenario, the network is always very safe from attacks and vulnerabilities.

Pros

  • Increased level of network protection against threats.
  • Visibility and control of applications that users access.
  • URL Filtering to block unauthorized or prohibited websites on the internal corporate network.
  • Protection against diverse malware at the edge of the network.
  • Firewall redundancy with another backup appliance.

Cons

  • The url filtering and application control licenses are not perpetual and need to be renewed every year.

Likelihood to Recommend

With the nextgen Barracuda CloudGen Firewall F380 we created a robust and redundant environment with 2 appliances deployed in the datacenter, one active and the second in standby. Deep packet inspection and layered application layer 7 control strengthens our network security and protects us from existing attacks and vulnerabilities. The experience has been positive with solid protection with easy management and control of the network. The firewall also allows homeoffice using VPN remote for us employees to use for work.

</div>

Pros

  • Clear and simple configuration
  • Secure Device
  • Easy to use

Cons

  • Being able to manage all firewalls in one pane of glass without charging more for this
  • Ability to get better push notifications
  • Better online documentation

If you need an easy to configure and manage firewall this series is for you. This is probably overkill for a small business but at the midsize its perfect.

Barracuda experience for a mid-sized and rapidly changing School District.

Rating: 8 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

This product serves as both our primary edge firewalls as well as our SD-WAN concentrators and end-points. We occasionally use smaller Barracuda firewalls in mobile or field-office applications as well. We have used Barracuda for general-purpose student web filtering in the past.

Pros

  • Edge Firewall
  • Deployment flexibility
  • Basic SD-WAN

Cons

  • Web Filtering
  • Data Visibility
  • External Reporting / Logging
  • Licensing Model

Likelihood to Recommend

We began using Barracuda for the traditional edge firewall use case. It does VERY well in this role. The virtual service hosting modality (even with an on-premise appliance) provides really great flexibility to meet our specific needs. It also lets us easily update the firewalls to adjust to changing needs within our organization. We have begun the deployment of Barracuda firewalls to provide internal defenses as well, isolating particular locations or business units to provide traffic visibility or better control of network traffic prior to tunneling over WAN. We have deployed only basic SD-WAN with Barracuda so far but how found no issues with that either. Barracuda firewalls would be less suitable for very small deployments or where licensing costs are a concern for shelved hardware.

Combined solution for application performance boost and secure SD-WAN

Rating: 8 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use Barracuda secure SD-WAN mainly to boost application performance by ensuring a reliable connectivity to remote sites and users. There are rush hours where traffic from cloud apps and off-network users increases and crowds the network. With barracuda we are able to boost performance of crucial apps and high priority projects in a very secure manner. This way, my top-priority bots don't experience downtimes.

Pros

  • Uses next-gen firewalls to assure data security
  • Scales dynamically despite the traffic to match workloads

Cons

  • It Still cannot combat link redundancy speedily. One time a network link failed and it took quite a while before restoring traffic from the backup link.

Likelihood to Recommend

Whether it's SaasS or internet-bound traffic, Barracuda is capable of directly sending internet with appropriate security inspection with no backhauls. In my department, we achieve consistent network link pooling, data caching optimization for bots handling critical workloads. There is always enogh bandwidth for applications with Barracuda optimization. We are however not completely satisfied with their link redundancy handling capabilities as I've explained.

Great product

Rating: 10 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Used mainly as a router and firewall in all of our stores globally to terminate all management VPN tunnels to the stores and within the same country to avoid problems with long-distance internet connections. The main problem we have dealt with was trying to make sure all the stores have enough bandwidth (at least 20up/20dn) so that the Barracuda can perform best.

Pros

  • Routing
  • Firewall
  • Network management

Cons

  • Can't think of anything right now, very pleased with performance

Likelihood to Recommend

Used as a gateway in shops, will be good for routing and firewall.

CloudGen Firewall works for me!

Rating: 10 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use the Cloudgen Firewall as an edge device for our retail stores. It is an effective solution that does not break the bank. Configuring a box can be more technical than other solutions but after doing a couple it becomes repetitive anyways. At that point it can be documented and easily followed.

Pros

  • VPN
  • Routing
  • Edge protection

Cons

  • Configuring could be more intuitive.
  • The hardware platform changes sometimes can surprise the users. F18a to F18b changed port count.

Likelihood to Recommend

It works very well in a retail environment with multiple shops that need a VPN tunnel back to corporate.

I have not used it as the edge device in a large office. That performance is unknown to me.

My personal experience with Barracuda CloudGen Firewall

Rating: 9 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

As MVP this is being used for setups in Azure i demo / develop. The reason to use Barracuda in my opinion in Azure is because they truly try to leverage al the cloud native benefits and combine that with their proprietary product without sacrificing the benefits from both.

Pros

  • ARM Deployment
  • Azure DEVOPS integration
  • FW, IPS/IDS, AV, Application Filtering and so on :)

Cons

  • better box lever integration with Azure CLI (within secure limits)

Likelihood to Recommend

Very likely,

The product and the team behind it make it a winner.

First Firewall I feel Comfortable With!

Rating: 9 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We purchased the Barracuda CGF to replace our current Cisco Firewall. We have always suffered issues trying to manage the Cisco firewall. The Barracuda CGF is user friendly and much more intuitive. We started using the CudaLaunch to begin with, as a necessity from the ongoing pandemic. It saved us! Being that we are new (less than 6 months) on the Barracuda CGF, we have not yet moved all of our firewall settings over to it and implemented the firewall portion fully. We intend to do that soon.

Pros

  • We only use the CudaLaunch now and love it!!

Cons

  • I can't think of anything

Likelihood to Recommend

Since we have only implemented the Barracuda CloudGen Firewall a few months ago, we only started using the CudaLaunch VPN portion of the firewall. We had used several other VPN utilities, and they all had issues over time. Mostly with disconnecting the user. We have not had any issues with the Barracuda CGF CudaLaunch VPN at all in the months we have been using it. And believe me, with the pandemic, we have been using it heavily over the past months.

We will be moving our old Cisco firewall settings to the Barracuda CGF and coming off of the Cisco firewall completely in the near future.

Small school review

Rating: 7 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

It is our company-wide firewall and provides a back-up web filtering service to compliment an existing solution. It allows us to redirect traffic from outside of the physical building and provide a secure connection to a number of internally host web applications. It also provides a layer of security to our monitored CCTV solution.

Pros

  • Robust hardware (no failures in 6 years).
  • Relatively easy to manage.
  • Upgraded hardware every 4 years.

Cons

  • Difficult initial set-up for non-network proficient staff.
  • Web-filter reporting is not great.
  • Support can be quite difficult to reach.

Likelihood to Recommend

Well suited to a larger company with dedicated staff. Would possibly be a little complex for smaller businesses. There are a lot of functions that we don't use as a basic firewall would probably have sufficed, but the build quality and scope for future expansion make it worthwhile. Clearer documentation on how to enable features for specific scenarios would help us to get more out of it.

Barracuda CloudGen Firewall - Recommended

Rating: 10 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We bought the CloudGen to replace an aging Juniper firewall - to increase throughput, security, and flexibility. At the start of lockdown, we had plenty of people working from home - the built-in Client To Site VPN has been a godsend in terms of connecting remote workers.

Pros

  • Easy to manage. The Dashboard allows you to configure all your 'need to see' options and the GUI is easily navigated.
  • Builtin VPN. We used the built in VPN facilities to help stabilise our MS Direct Access connection for teachers and students during the recent lockdown. It was easy to configure and simple to use in that the user doesn't have to do anything as it can all be automated to connect at login.

Cons

  • Not come across any yet! A nice-to-have could be a mobile app which allows you to monitor it on your phone or mobile device.

Likelihood to Recommend

CloudGen is perfect for our size business to help remote workers connect seamlessly with the VPN product. We have around 120 staff and 900+ students with the ability to connect remotely to the school - the CloudGen provides the throughput and the security to allow this. Obviously not all people are connected at once, but as far as I'm aware there is no user limit.
