Datorama, Friend or Foe?

Our company is using Datorama as a way to help support our reporting needs across multiple clients. It is to showcase our performance in an easily digestible dashboard so that random one-off reporting pulls are no longer needed which will free up time for the team to optimize and strategize toward our performance goals.
  • Aggregates data from multiple channels
  • Provides data visuals
  • Easily shareable across team members and clients
  • It is not your generic BI tool, can seem very complicated
  • Data mapping and set up is a very manual process
  • Product is unnecessary if you have a data team
Datorama is well suited for marketing teams that do not have a data services department that can manually pull and aggregate data. If your team lacks the analytical edge then Datorama is perfect to easily showcase data and KPIs from numerous channels. This will cut the time you spend on reports in half for sure!

Datorama is being used by a couple of analytics teams within the agency but only for a number of clients - not across all clients. There is no standard platform that our analytics teams use across the entire Publicis Groupe, so there are a few platforms that contribute to analytics readouts. It's simply departmental as well, as only the analytics team pulls data and uses it for client deliverables/reports. It's primarily used for client deliverables and reporting, to show the clients a quick performance read out each month across all live campaigns. Though, some teams, like programmatic, will use it for the day-to-day optimizations.
  • Data Visualization: Data can easily be viewed in the Dashboard, where you can pull quick insights & easily understand them.
  • Report Customization: The platform allows for easy customization of reports, with a variety of metrics that can be pulled from any data source/ad server.
  • Reporting Templates: Going along with the above, you can also save custom reports as templates to use in the future.
  • Confusing Naming Conventions: Some of the metrics that pull in from the source are named very differently than how they appear in the source. This was confusing in the first couple times customizing a report, so it's necessary to have a lookup available so that you know what you're pulling.
It's definitely helpful for monthly reports & for pulling quick insights.

I think it's less appropriate for day-to-day optimizations, i.e. search or programmatic teams are better suited just using data/reports from the Search platform or DSP to inform decisions, even if only directional.

Datorama is used throughout our organization to consolidate data and reporting from all of our marketing and advertising tools into one system. It helps alleviate the time and effort put into reporting by automating the process, and allows us to more easily gain insights from our data.
  • Datorama's greatest strength is its ability to map data sources together. It will automatically join data from different sources for better analysis and comparison, and allows great control and flexibility for users to change how data is mapped is used.
  • The number of methods for importing data is impressive. Native connectors exist for most major marketing platforms, and connections can be set up for almost any type of data.
  • The user interface and design of Datorama excels beyond many of its competitors. It has a modern design and is very easy to use and navigate. The visualizations within the dashboards also have a much better look than other tools we've used.
  • Datorama is always innovating and growing. They've recently released an AI powered tool to help find data insights, and are frequently updating the platform and its abilities.
  • The dashboards could use more interactivity, especially for lower-level users. Simple filters can be added to dashboards, but still lag behind the abilities of other BI tools.
  • The filtering logic for data within the dashboards could be more robust. We've run into use cases where it's difficult to include or exclude specific data when needed.
Datorama is the perfect solution for centralizing marketing and advertising data, and for automating reporting. It can also be used for different data types outside of marketing, but that typically requires more effort from the user.

We use Datorama for all clients to visually show performance metrics, trends and KPI's on a monthly basis. This is being used across the agency. It allows the client to view these dashboards on an on-going basis which addresses any performance problems or questions they may have that the dashboard can answer.
  • Visuals and graphs are user-friendly and help paint the picture of what we are trying to accomplish when showing to the clients.
  • There are many ways to pull in performance metrics and make each dashboard unique in its own way.
  • Very customizable and easy to share amongst clients and colleagues.
  • Navigating in the interface to update connections and settings is a little confusing.
  • Backend mapping amongst certain API's can be problematic if certain naming conventions are not properly followed.
When you have a new client that is very interested in performance on a daily basis. Datorama allows the client to be able to view the dashboard as a view-only option and help provide them with the insights and performance metrics that they want to see. This makes it easier on the agency's side to provide this data for them without having to re-pull data or re-create reports.

Across the whole company. Datorama streamlines reporting in an easy way for the client to understand.
  • Ability to change data with pivot tables.
  • Import data from APIs.
  • Create formulas on the back end.
  • Naming convention has to be just right for it to work.
  • Hard to pull in things like GDN and Facebook.
It's really great from a high level perspective, but sometimes it takes the client a long time to adapt to Datorama. Sometimes it is easier for me to pull data myself, so I know it's correct!
